Al-Assad with Clergy
Assad said that the Syrian people have chosen to show independence and sovereignty not submission to the will of the West and urged the population to follow him in solving the problems that lie ahead with reason and wisdom, not with emotions and passions.
He added that in a time like this the role of the clergy is paramount in preserving the homeland and raising awareness among citizens. He said that the crisis the country went through was partially provoked by an “ethic” problem, either of the officials or the citizens themselves.
The president, which acted rather casual considering what had happened in his country for the last three weeks, lectured clergymen about their mission, about how religion should not be used for purposes that do not serve its cause, alluding probably to the famous Friday rallies that were organized after the weekly prayer, and expressed that it was time for the country to move on and rebuild.
While speaking of reform, al-Assad said that a difference of opinion is healthy as long as it is for the betterment of the homeland. Or as long as it doesn’t get you killed by the state’s security forces, one may add.
Bashar al-Assad and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Speaking on a Hezbollah-controlled television, the Iranian president said that the people and the government must agree, and that any problem between the people and their leaders must be discussed at the negotiation table.
By the end of his advices to the Syrian president, Ahmadinejad said that the killings cannot be justified, and that killing the people only serves “Zionist interests.”
The opposition the Iranian leader is talking about is on its way to coalesce, as the main leaders met in Turkey and attempted to unite. There is a long way ahead, they said after the meeting, considering that they had been kept in a state of division by the regime. Some of the participants said that a national council was created, similar to the one in Libya.
The president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, demanded last week that the president of Syria step down, and allow the international human rights organizations to investigate what happened during the five months of crackdown against the Syrian people.
Syrian president announced that the problem has been solved and that the security intervention was over, but there are reports that say that even after the announcement made by the president people have died in Syria.
Syrian authorities have systematically maintained that the people who were protesting in the streets were low life elements instigated by the Western conspiracy. For that reason, it had no problem sending tanks against cities that were left in ruins as the tanks went off.
Damascus said that it would allow humanitarian agencies to come to see how they can help the people in need, but the UN requires that activists come to Syria to investigate the claims regarding the 2,000 dead and the crimes against humanity.
Earlier this week the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution by which it was said that crimes against humanity have been committed in Syria. China, Cuba and Russia opposed the inclusion of the expression crimes against humanity in the resolution.
If the conclusion the UN Human Rights Council will receive by November prove that crimes against humanity have been perpetrated in Syria, the United Nations Security Council will issue a request to the International Criminal Court in The Hague for an international arrest warrant in the president’s name.
