Umm al-Qura Mosque
A suicide bomber posing as beggar killed 29 in a major Sunni mosque in Baghdad on Sunday as he detonated his charge soon after the end of evening prayers. He blew himself up on the main hall of the Umm al-Qura mosque, an important Sunni site frequented by Iraqi lawmakers. One of the Iraqi members of the parliament was killed on this occasion.
The suicider entered the mosque pretending he was hurt, and thus he entered the main hall, where he blew himself up, one eyewitness that survived the event said. The hospital said that 29 dead bodies were brought in, whereas the security spokesperson said that six people were killed. That should not seem strange, since it is almost a practice for the hospitals and authorities to give conflicting data.
No one claimed responsibility for it, but in Iraq this kind of actions are being conducted by al-Qaeda-affiliated organizations like Islamic State of Iraq, which want to foster sectarian violence so that the government be weak, and the political struggle continue.
Violence in Iraq
It is said that al-Qaeda has resurfaced in many parts of Iraq and that it is even capable of mounting large-scale operations, in spite of losing leaders and the grip on Iraqi territory.
The bombing on Sunday is the most serious attack since August 15, when 70 people were killed by a series of car bombings and roadside explosion. The al-Qaeda affiliates have been blamed for the killing.
This violence comes as the U.S. combatant military is expected to finish its withdrawal from Iraq until the end of the year. Washington and Baghdad are still negotiating whether some military should be left behind to help Iraqi troops create a defense capability.
The departure of the U.S. troops is cause for the terrorist organization to attempt destabilizing the government by fueling the sectarian fight. In this context, blowing up a Sunni mosque is an act that is meant to seed distrust among the coalition formed by both Sunni and Shia.
