Yanks hit three grand slams to write history
New York Yankees thundered three grand slams past Oakland Athletics whom he thwarted 22-9 on Thursday at the Yankee stadium where Robinson Cano, Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson got their names on a MLB history page.
It was for the fist time a side fired three grand slams in a game, the fact of remaining second in the Conference being forgotten at least for one day. The victory was even the more remarkable the hosts managed to overcome a 1-7 deficit set in the first three terms by Oakland. Weeks brought the first lead for Athletics in the opening term after Matsui hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Teixeira then grounded out to second allowing Jeter to even the situation right afterwards. On the other side, the visitors were preparing for a six point rally, five of which scored in the third term. Pennington doubled to right as De Jesus brought back the minimal advantage in the second inning.
The third one started with Weeks extending the lead to two points. Matsui made it 4-1 after De Jesus singled to right as Willingham got to third. Pennington hit a 381 foot homerun as Willingham and De Jesus made it 7-1. That was also the last time Oakland were given the chance to stay atop.
Martin cut the deficit to five points in the fourth term after hitting a 349 foot homerun. Cano then started to make history for the Yankees, hitting a 379 foot homerun, which covered all Jeter, Granderson and Rodriguez. That was also the first grand slam of the meeting.
Martin imitated his team mate in the sixth term, firing a 379 footer which involved all Granderson, Rodriguez and Swisher. The seventh round saw New York score six more points and take a 16-7 lead. Cano hit a sacrifice fly to center with Granderson scoring the 11th one with Teixeira to third.
Martin then singled to right while Teixeira scored the 12th one for the hosts, having Rodriguez to third and Swisher to second. Rodriguez made things look a real mess for the away side, who conceded yet another point after Nunez grounded into fielder’s choice to second.
But New York did not stop there as Swisher, Nunez and Gardner were allowed to score three more points in the same term. Oakland could only score two consolation points, the first of which in the eighth round.
Cervelli broke back immediately, after Gardner singled to right, while a third grand slam was about to be provided. Granderson hit a 396 foot homerun, covering all Martin, Nunez and Gardner to a historical point. Jones fired a 431 footer right afterwards, while Allen doubled to left for Willingham’s last consolation.
“I’m surprised it hadn’t been done before with all the great teams and great individual hitters that have come throughout the course of the game,” said Granderson after the game. Martin, who also was part of a grand slam declared: “Definitely cool. It was fun to be part of it. When there’s nowhere to put them, they have to throw strikes. This game has been played for a long time. Pretty much everything has already happened. I’m waiting to see who hits four.”
New York stay second in the East with a .609 percentage which includes 78 wins and 50 losses. The victory over Oakland was their sixth in the past ten games and 41st at home. On the other side, Oakland are third in the West with a .454 record featuring 59 wins and 71 defeats, the loss to the Yanks being their fourth in the past ten games and 41st on the road.
Chicago Cubs 3 – 8 Atlanta Braves
Atlanta picked a comprehensive win yesterday at the Wrigley Field where the visitors managed not to lose the lead until the end. McCann opened the clash with a 425 foot homerun, allowing at the same time both Bourn and Prado to extend the advantage to three points.
Barney then grounded out to shortstop allowing Castro to cut the deficit to two points. Byrd fired a 381 foot homerun later on, while Colvin evened the situation after Soto grounded out to pitcher in what seemed to be a Cubs comeback. But that was the last point they scored as the last innings saw Atlanta draw a clear win.
Uggla walked in the third term and Bourn made it 4-3 with Prado getting to third and McCann to second. Freeman singled to right as Prado doubled the lead with McCann getting to third and Uggla to second. Furthermore, Heyward hit a sacrifice fly to left permitting Uggla to make things look clear as possible despite four more innings were left.
McCann fired a 372 footer in the seventh inning, while Bourn singled to left for Costanza’s eighth one. Despite the win, Braves remain well behind leaders Phillies in the East, sitting six gamesback against them with a .598 record including 79 wins and 53 losses. The victory against Cubs was their eighth in the past ten games and 38th on the road.
As for Chicago, they lie second from the bottom in the Central, 20.5 gamesback behind Brewers. They have gone .435 so far this term, record which incorporates 57 wins and 74 losses, the defeat to Atlanta being their sixth in the past ten games and 37th at home.
St. Louis Cardinals 8 – 4 Pittsburgh Pirates
Cardinals overcame Pirates on Thursday at the Busch stadium where the hosts were led 3-4 at one point. St. Louis were the first to take the lead though, as Pujols doubled to left for Craig’s first point of the meeting. Berkman then singled to right, allowing the same Pujols score with Berkman getting to second.
Furcal extended the lead to three points after Schumaker singled to center in the second inning. Cardinals’ momentum was broken in the next two terms by Pirates who provided a four point midway run to take the control of the game.
Presley singled to center for McKenry’s first point, while the same Presley and McCuthen level the result right afterwards, following Jones’ singling. Finally, the rally was ended by Cedeno who gave his side some confidence for the next terms. Unfortunately for the visitors, that was their last sparkling moment as things started to get bad for them.
Freese singled to right allowing Craig and Pujols to put the hosts back into the lead. Finally, the eighth term saw the same Cardinals grab a comprehensive win through Holliday, who fired a 395 foot homerun which converted both Jay and Pujols.
St. Louis are second in the Conference, sitting 9.5 gamesback behind Milwaukee, with a .519 record which includes 68 wins and 63 defeats. The victory over Pittsburgh was their third in the past ten games and 33rd at home. On the other side, Pirates are fourth with a .469 percentage featuring 61 wins and 69 losses, the defeat to Cardinals being their sixth in the past ten games and 32nd on the road.
