Adebayor scores twice as Spurs best Reds
Luka Modric opened the score early in the seventh minute, while Defoe doubled to lead amid the second term. Adebayor made it three just a couple of minutes later and completed the double two minutes before the final whistle. On the other side, Liverpool failed to win the three pints which could have propelled them third in the Premier League table.
The first goal came early into the game as Modric put his side into the minimal lead with a screamer from outside the box. The Czech player took advantage of a poor clearance by Liverpool’s defence to finish it straight into the top left hand corner from more than 20 yards. Charlie Adam then picked a yellow for a foul on the midfielder.
Modric missed a second chance in the 15th minute when the playmaker was denied by Reina. The follow up was also missed by Adebayor who was chasing her second goal at Tottenham. Liverpool’s first big chance came in the 18th minute through Suarez who was caught offside in what could have been a turning point on the White Hart Lane.
Adebayor was the second one to see a yellow card following a tough challenge on Carroll. Kenny Dalglish made his first change early in the 27th minute introducing Coates for injured Agger. Just one minute later Adam conceded a second straight yellow card for a foul on Parker, leaving his side down to ten and in big difficulty.
Frustration brought Skrtel a yellow card in the 38th minute after the right defender took down Bale. Reserve Coates also conceded a yellow one with five minutes left, following an ugly intervention on Adebayor. One minute before the half time Suarez saw his name on the card book for ironic reactions on the referee.
The half time went 1-0 as Spurs were the more dangerous side. Tottenham replaced Kranjcar with Van der Vaart one minute into the second part in what would prove to be an inspired move by the Londoners’ boss. Adebayor got his first second half chance in the 57th minute. Bale beat his mark to feed the Togolese with a perfect cross which the striker finished straight at Reina in what should have been a more difficult test for the Spanish keeper.
Defoe then picked the same Adeabyor inside the box from where the former Real Madrid star struck it poorly. A second red card was seen by Skrtel who took down Bale in the 64th minute. Five minutes later Spurs scored two more goals as result of Reds’ frustration and lack of concentration.
Van der Vaart picked Defoe on Reds half only to start a long distance run and beat both his mark and Reina into the near post from 15 yards or so. Even more than that, Tottenham were given a 3-0 lead in the 68th minute when Adebayor scored his first one following a poor save from Reina.
The Spanish keeper failed to hold the ball as the Togolese converted the follow up with ease into the empty net after lifting the ball past Reina. Dalglish then introduced Jay Spearing and Craig Bellamy for Downing and Suarez respectively but Liverpool would not improve their play.
Harry Redknapp made a couple of changes in the 85th minute, introducing Giovani Dos Antos and Sebastien Bassong for Defoe and King respectively in what was rather a time wasting move than a tactical one. Adebayor closed the meeting with a four one for Spurs. The striker was perfectly played with a cross from the left which he volleyed it home past Reina from eight yards.
Tottenham exited the bottom area, climbing 11th in the standings with six points won in four games. Liverpool have dropped eighth with seven points, the same as Aston Villa and Everton. Spurs will next meet Wigan Athletic away on Saturday, while Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers the same day on the Anfield.
Said a delighted Redknapp after the big win: “He (Adebayor) was fantastic against Liverpool and he was great at Wolves last week as well. The pass he played to Defoe just after half-time was unbelievable. The picture he had, the ball came from Kyle Walker, he helped it on and Jermain should have scored really.”
