Cancun is always working for different causes which try to benefit the environment.
It is for all that is mentioned above that Cancun’s OVC is now proud of having its Friends of the Blue Gold Project selected among some 57,000 projects in all of Mexico. Proposed by Friends of Sian Ka’an, the project was chosen as one of the 26 most innovative and sustainable initiatives, as well as one of the projects with the most social impact, by the program Mexico Initiative 2011.
The Friends of the Blue Gold Project (in Spanish known as “Amigos del Oro Azul”) will take place in the Quintana Roo area around Cancun. The project aims at using drinking water as the integrating element to promote nature conservation of the most extensive woods of Mexico, the swamps and the greatest coral reef in the American continent.
The preservation of the longest underwater rivers in the planet, which are unique in Mexico and a source of the so-called “Blue Gold”, is necessary for the health of the Mayan communities, the growing population of Quintana Roo and the economic development of the most important tourism destination in Latin America and the Mexican Caribbean area.
The initiative can be supported by following it on Mexican TV. Amigos del Oro Azul is broadcasted every Sunday at 10.30pm in the TV channels Televisa and TV Azteca. It is also available in the following website: http://www.iniciativamexico.org/proyectos/fase_1/Conservando_el_Oro_Azul.
Many of the best destinations for tourism in Mexico are endangered and need of our help. By supporting projects like Friends of the Blue Gold in Cancun, we are able to do sustainable tourism in Mexico and enjoy its beautiful landscape while, at the same time, helping it last for the future generations.
