Nole eases throguh the quarters
Top seed Novak Djokovic has made the progress through the US Open quarter finals after defeating Alexandr Dolgopolov in three sets 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 to face conational Janko Tipsarevic.
Nole, who has reached the last eight term without losing a set, converted 66 percent of first serve points, 43 of returning ones, hitting a the same time 13 winners past the 22nd seed Ukraine who lost the opener after a 30 point tie break rally the end of which belonged to the world number one.
Two break points won in the second term allowed the same Djokovic to take the comfortable lead, while the third set saw him convert both break point chances, clinching the victory in nearly two hours and a half. On the other side, Dolgopolov committed 44 unforced errors and won 41 percent of first service points and 32 of receiving.
Said Djokovic of his upcoming meeting with Tipsarevic: “We never played best-of-five against each other, so it’s going to be a first time experience for both of us. He’s playing the best tennis of his life. He’s very confident. But there is certainly this mentally strange feeling when you’re playing somebody that is one of your best friends in your private life, as well.”
Next up for Nole is Janko Tipsarevic who needed four sets to get rid of former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero whom he defeated 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. The 20th seed Tipsarevic broke his opponent four times in ten tries, finishing the game with a 63 first serve percentage, 54 winners, including 20 aces and a 37 percent of returning points.
As for Ferrero, the Spanish veteran committed 39 unforced errors and failed to convert any of the two break points, losing the game in three hours and 43 minutes. He also won 57 percent of first service points, 25 of receiving balls and hit 34 winners to Serb’s 54.
Tipsarevic will meet Nole for the third time, the head to head series being led 2-0 by the current leader, who last defeated the 27 year old at the 2009 Belgrade event. Djokovic’s first win dates from the 2008 Queen Club.
Djokovic has made the progress through the quarter finals with the sheet clean. He made his debut with an easy progress thanks to Conor Niland’s abandon. The Serb then continued to impress with a 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 win against Carlos Berlocq and a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 one over Nikolay Davydenko.
As for Tipsarevic, he has dropped two sets so far. He made an easy start, beating Augustin Gensse 6-2, 7-5, 6-0, but had a harder life against Philipp Petzschner whom he defeated 6-0, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Tomas Berdych’s abandon allowed him to make a free progress through the fourth term.
On the same first half of the table, Roger Federer eased pat Juan Monaco in three easy sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, needing one hour and 22 minutes to make the progress. The 30 year old Swiss, who is chasing his sixth title in US Open, converted half of his 14 break points chances, without allowing his opponent to build any chance.
Roger hit 42 winners, finishing the game with a 66 first serve percentage, a 57 return one, including 42 winners and 14 aces. On the other side, the Argentine left with a similar first serve percentage but could only convert 22 percent of receiving points.
Jo Wilfried Tsonga is Federer’s next opponent. The Frenchman edged Mardy Fish in a five set epic, 6-4, 6-7, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to claim the victory in three hours and 40 minutes. Tsonga broke the crowd favorite four times in six tries, leaving the court with a 57 first serve percentage, a 33 return one and 51 winners.
Fish, winner of this term’s Atlanta event, finished the meeting with a 60 first serve percentage, 43 winners, a 32 return percentage as well as 55 unforced errors and two out of eight break point conversions.
The head to head series between Federer and Tsonga is led by 4-3 the Swiss who has last defeated the world number 11 at this year’s Rome Masters event. This will also be their fifth meeting of the year with the French grabbing the last two wins in Wimbledon and Montreal.
Concerning the second half of the draw, second seed Rafa Nadal, defending champion in New York, beat Davind Nalbandian in three sets, 7-6, 6-1, 7-5 and will next meet Gilles Muller. The former world champion broke the Argentine seven times in 11 tries, finishing the game also with a 76 first serve percentage, 22 winners and a 48 return percentage.
On the other side, Nalbandian hit more winners, 36, but could only convert three out of eight break points, losing the match in two hours and a half. He also won 53 percent of first serve points, 36 percent of receiving ones and committed 60 unforced errors.
Nadal’s next opponent Muller eased past Igor Kunitsyn 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, needing just one hour and a half to secure a fourth term berth. The Luxembourg player converted four out of nine break points and saved all the four ones coming from the opposite side.
Muller, who is chasing his best Grand Slam performance in New York, won at the same time 52 percent of first serves, hit 56 winners and converted 41 percent of receiving points, compared to Russian’s 47 first serve percentage, 17 winners and 27 return percentage.
En route to the fourth term, Nadal has kept the sheet clean against all Andrey Golubev, Nicolas Mahut and Nalbandian, while Muller has already lost one set to Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.
Another former US Open winner Andy Roddick has made a clean progress when the American defeated Julien Benneteau 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 to face David Ferrer in the fourth term. The crowd favorite broke the Frenchman three times, hitting 21 aces and 45 winners. Benneteau hit more winners, but he also committed 36 unforced errors, compared to Roddick’s 16.
David Ferrer has also made a three set progress after beating 26th seed Florian Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 7-6. The Spaniard converted five out of eight break points, won 57 percent of first serve balls and 42 of return ones, while Mayer came up with a 58 first serve percentage, a 31 receiving one and 31 unforced errors, losing the meeting in one hour and 47 minutes.
Mayer converted just one out of four break points and was very close to pushing the meeting into a fourth set. He managed to push the third one into tie break, only to be thwarted at two. Ferrer had previously defeated Igor Andreev 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 and James Blake 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, while Roddick follows a 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win against Michaell Russell and a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 one over Jack Sock.
Fourth favorite Andy Murray, who is still looking for his first ever Grand Slam trophy, crashed Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to meet Donald Young in the fourth term. The Scott left with a 76 first serve percentage, 25 winners, a 48 return percentage and only 16 unforced errors, while Spaniard’s showing included a 46 first serve percentage, 17 winners, a 24 return percentage and 44 unforced errors, something which brought him a one hour and a half loss.
As for Young, he ousted Juan Ignacio Chela in three sets, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 after breaking the 24th seed five times in ten tries. On the other side, the Argentine came up with a 60 first serve percentage, 19 winners and a poor 29 return percentage, compared to the American who had a 71 first serve percentage and a 44 return one, as well.
Finally, John Isner, winner at the Newport event, had a slow start against compatriot Alex Bogomolov Jr. whom he defeated 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round. Isner edged his opponent 11-9 in the tie break, but had some easy life in the last two sets. He broke Bogomolov just twice and saved all the eight break points coming from opposite side.
Inser showing also included a 71 first serve percentage, 48 winners, and a 33 return percentage, while the other American came up with a 67 first serve percentage, 23 unforced errors, 39 winners and a 23 receiving percentage.
Next up for the American is Gilles Simon who follows a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6 win against Juan Martin Del Potro, winner of the 2009 edition. The Frenchman needed nearly four hours to oust the Argentine whom he broke three times in 12 tries.
As for Delpo, he finished the game with a couple of break point conversions, a 59 first serve percentage, a 33 return one and 36 winners, compared to Simon’s 58 first serve percentage, 47 winners and a 37 receiving percentage.
