Milan Edge Cesena For First Term Victory
Seedorf brings AC Milan the first win of the season
AC Milan grabbed their first victory of the season when the Italian defending champions defeated Cesena 1-0 at the San Siro on Saturday. Seedorf scored the only goal of the game early in the fifth minute with a 20 yard screamer.
Cassano was the first to threaten Ravaglia with a goal but the Cesena keeper saved the ball into the corner which would bring AC Milan the opener. Seedorf was picked with a short-taken corner to deliver a superb cross into the top left hand far post past Ravaglia who could only shave the ball. The Dutch veteran seemed to look for a cross inside the box rather than to put it home, though.
Cesena won a free kick just a couple of minutes later which striker Candreva delivered goalwards, but only to be denied by a vigilant Abbiati who tipped the ball away. Mutu got his first chance in the ninth minute following a great action developed in front, but the finish of which was missed by the Romanian. The same former Fiorentina forward thundered a shot on goal one minute later but it was Abbiati to make another big save.
The visitors put more pressure in the next minutes as Candreva’s dangerous cross was denied by the Rossoneri keeper who was in great shape throughout the entire meeting. Massimiliano Allegri’s side neared the second one in the 25th minute when Seedorf beat his marks to deliver a perfect cross inside the box which Yepes failed to contact.
Rossoneri were the first to pick a yellow card through Twiso who was cautioned by the referee in the 35th minute for a foul on Marco Parolo. Cassano mocked a golden chance in the 37th minute following a perfect play from Abate who beat all his marks to pick the striker in good position. Unfortunately for Cassanon, he failed to meet the cross in what could have been a two goal lead for the home side.
The half time went 1-0 to the Rossoneri who were dominating the game at all facets. Cesena made the first substitution in the 45th minute as coach Marco Giampaolo replaced Martinez and Candreva for Ghezzal and Eder respectively. Five minutes into the second half El Sharaawy missed a big chance for Milan following an impressive play from the striker whose finish was locked by Ravaglia inside the box.
Cesena broke back immediately through Eder who could have score a leveler had not he been dragged down by Yepes who took him down and received a yellow card. Left defender Taiwo departed and Zambrotta came on in the 53rd minute.
Seedorf neared his double in the 62nd minute when Abate played Cassano in good position. Cassano left the ball to the Dutch whose dangerous finish went just over the bar. Cassano got his second term big opportunity four minutes later. The forward was fed on the edge of the box only to strike it straight at the keeper. Seedorf picked his first yellow card in the 66th minute for a foul on Rosi. El Sharaawy made way to Aquilani who entered the pitch in the 68th minute.
Cassano tried his luck with a shot from the edge of the box to which keeper Ravaglia was equal, though. The striker was then replaced by veteran Inzaghi who has not scored a goal this season. With two minutes left in the game, Zambrotta mocked his only chance of the meeting, striking the ball straight at Ravaglia when he should have done much better.
Said coach Allegri after the win: “We did everything we needed to do. We got back to doing things that we missed out on in recent games which cost us two draws at home and a defeat at Napoli. Cassano did well, he is developing and needs to keep doing so. If Ibra and Ambrosini are completely fit then they will play on Wednesday but we won’t risk them.”
AC Milan are 12th in the standings with five points, the same as four other teams, including AS Roma and Lazio. On contrast, Cesena lie foot of the table with zero points, being the only side which remains scoreless this new season. Rossoneri will next play Juventus in what is expected to be the derby of the day next Sunday. Juventus are currently sharing the leading position with Udinese. Cesena will next face Chievo at home where they will be chasing their first points of the term.
