In a typical David meets Goliath battle little known noodle and flour maker Sichuan Fangguo Food Co has come under fire from Apple, who’s Chinese lawyers have contacted them and said that their logo uses ‘conceptual elements taken from Apple’s’ in an obvious attempt to get them to change it. As CNET reports, although the logo is slightly similar to Apple’s, LG should be the primary company throwing legal papers around being that Sichuan Fangguo Food Co’s logo is more similar to theirs.
Hitting back at Apple, Fangguo CEO Zhao Yi said that (on the logo) ”There’s a leaf so you can tell it’s an apple, but it also contains two Chinese characters… The orientation is also different, and ours is a totally different shape… Besides, when I started Fangguo, I had never even heard of Apple.”
Going further, Yi went on to say that their logo was designed in the 1980′s by a Beijing-based graphic design company, however to prove this they’ll have to dish out records of this and provide them to Apple or even the courts. To back David up a little bit here (note the Goliath hint), Fangguo Food Co is based in Nanchong, China, and Nanchong is famous for its fruit. Having them change their logo could destroy any brand identity they currently have.
We think this one could get interesting, so we’ll update this post with anything new.
