Rangers have extended their winning streak to four successes after overcoming Oakland 3-2 yesterday at the O.co Coliseum where the West leaders grabbed the victory thanks to a couple of late homers.
The opening term went scoreless for the two sides in what seemed to be a tight meeting in Oakland. Rangers were given the first lead in the second inning by Young who scored the first point after Napoli grounded into double play. Athletics broke back in the fifth round when Allen singled to left for Pennington’s leveler, while Allen made it 2-1 right afterwards, following Weeks’ singling.
The next two terms also went blank for the two teams but the game was far from being over. Kinlser evened the situation in the eighth term with a 374 foot homerun, while Hamilton imitated him minutes later, hitting a 374 footer for a hard fought win.
Said Kinsler after the game: “That’s something you think about when the season’s over and you’re sitting on your couch after a week of just hanging out. But right now it’s all team. It’s about winning games, shrinking that magic number and getting to the postseason as quick as possible.”
Rangers stay top spot in the West with a .581 percentage including 90 wins and 65 defeats. The victory over Oakland was their fourth in a row, eighth in the past ten games and 41st on the road. As for Athletics, they are third with a .445 record which features 69 wins and 86 defeats, the loss to the leaders being their third in a row, seventh in the past ten games and 38th at home.
Los Angeles Dodgers 5 – 8 San Francisco Giants
Giants grabbed a comprehensive win yesterday at the Dodger stadium where they defeated hosts Los Angeles thanks to an impressive first half which saw them score the first five points in a row. Beltran brought the first lead for Giants in the opening term, after Pill singled to center, while Pill and Belt brought a double for the same visitors minutes later, following Fontenot’s singling.
The next two terms went scoreless for the two teams but the fourth inning brought San Francisco a couple of more points through De Rosa and Stewart who made it 5-0 after Christian doubled to center. Dodgers’ first answer came in the fifth inning when Carroll singled to center for Velez’s first point. Furthermore, LA managed to cut the deficit to one point in the same fifth inning following a triple which included Kemp, who hit a 410 foot homerun, Gordon and Carroll.
Giants extended their lead to two points in the seventh round as De Rosa converted Christian’s singling for a 6-4 result. Torres then made it seven, following Pill’s double, while Pill scored the last point for San Francisco in the seventh term, after De Rosa hit a sacrifice fly to center.
The eighth term went scoreless for the two teams, while the ninth one belonged to the hosts who scored a fifth consolation point through Kemp after Loney singled to right.
Giants remain second in the West with a .542 record which includes 84 wins and 71 defeats, the victory over Dodgers being their ninth in the past ten games and 40th on the road. As for Los Angeles, they are third with a .500 percentage including 77 wins and 77 losses. The defeat to Giants was their fifth in the past ten games and 39th at home.
Minnesota Twins 4 – 5 Seattle Mariners
Seattle battled back to edge Twins yesterday at the Target Field where the visitors were subjected to a two point deficit early in the meeting. Revere brought the first lead for Minnesota in the opening term after Parmelee singled to left.
The next two terms went blank for both teams, while the fourth one sae Plouffe double the lead from Benson’s double. The fifth term also went clean for the squads but the game was far from being a tight one. Mariners replied with a five point run in the sixth and seventh innings which would bring them the victory.
Suzuki opened the run after Seager doubled to left center, while the latter one evened the situation in the same sixth round, following Ackley’s double. The next inning brought Mariners three more points. At first Robinson singled to right, allowing Pena and Olivo to score a precious double which put their side two points atop and then Robinson ended the run with a fifth one, following Suzuki’s double.
As for Twins, they could only cut the deficits without being able to take any lead in front of a lively Seattle. Dinkelman singled to center and Plouffe made it 3-5, while Cuddyer cored a fourth one after Plouffe singled to center, having Hughes to second, as well.
Seattle lie foot of the table in the West with a .426 record including 66 wins and 89 defeats, the victory over Twins being their third in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 28th on the road. On the other side, Minnesota are also lying bottom in the Central with a .383 poor percentage, by far the worst in the league, which features 59 wins and 95 defeats. The loss to Seattle was their 11th in a row and 47th at home.
Kansas City Royals 3 – 6 Detroit Tigers
Detroit have grabbed their 90th win of the season after defeating Royals yesterday at the Kauffman stadium. Tigers picked the first advantage in the opening round through Jackson who scored after Martinez singled to center.
Kansas broke back immediately though as Gordon leveled the score after Butler doubled to left. Moreover, Butler brought his side the first lead minutes later, following Francoeur’s double, in what proved to be a turning point. The hosts preserved the lead until the fifth term when they were evened by Jackson who made it 2-2 after Martinez grounded out to second.
Kansas took a deep breath in the sixth term when Butler singled to right and Cabrera made it three also thanks to an error committed by fielder Raburn. But the game was far form being over. Detroit tied their opponents in the seventh term through Kelly who made it 3-3 after Martinez singled to center.
Even more than that, Raburn propelled his side one point atop, following Cabrera’s double, while Kelly, who hit a 392 foot homerun, and Worth gave their side the clear win with two terms left.
Detroit lead the Central table with a .581 record including 90 wins and 65 defeats, the victory over Kansas being their seventh in the past ten games and 45th on the road. Royals are second from the bottom with a .436 record which features 68 wins and 88 losses. The loss to the leaders was their second in the past ten games and 41st at home.
Florida Marlins 4 – 0 Atlanta Braves
Marlins blanked Atlanta yesterday at the Sun Life stadium where the hosts dominated the entire game. Stanton was the first to bring his side a point in the second term, after Sanchez doubled to center. The next two terms went scoreless for the two squads and the fifth one saw Hayes hit a 387 foot homerun to double the lead for Marlins who would keep the sheet clean until the end of the clash.
Stanton scored his second one for Marlins in the sixth inning after Petersen hit a sacrifice fly to right, while Morrison ended the game with a 434 foot homerun in the eighth, giving his side a very easy win in Miami.
Florida lie bottom of the East table with a .455 record featuring 71 wins and 85 defeats. The victory over Braves was their fourth in the past ten games and 30th at home. Concerning Braves’ route, they have gone .564 so far this season, percentage which includes 88 wins and 68 defeats, the loss to Marlins being their sixth in the past ten games and 37th on the road.
Arizona Diamondbacks 8 – 5 Pittsburgh Pirates
Arizona have cemented their leading position in the West with a 90th season win when they defeated Pirates yesterday at the Chase Field. The hosts were given a three point quick lead in the very first inning, the first point being brought by Bloomquist who scored after Upton hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Arizona then extended the lead to three points thanks to a double brought by Montero, who hit a 413 foot homerun, and Hill. Pittsburgh’s first answer came in the second round through Ludwick who also fired a 399 foot homerun to cut the deficit to two points.
Upton made it 4-1 in the third term after Young singled to left, while Montero and Young came up with a precious double right afterwards. Hill then singled to left allowing Overbay and Roberts to bring a couple of more points and make it 8-1 with Miley getting to second.
That was also the last time Arizona scored a point as Pirates could only cut deficits. Lee singled to right as McCutchen closed the gap to six points. The same Lee fired a 446 footer in the sixth inning, making it 3-8. Pittsburgh were moving way too slowly, something which cost them the clear defeat. Harrison made it 4-8 in the seven inning, while Walker scored the last one for the visitors in the eighth one.
Arizona are top spot in the West with a .577 percentage which includes 90 wins and 66 defeats, the victory over Pirates being their fifth in the past ten games and 47th at home. As for Pittsburgh, they are second from the bottom in the Central with a .442 record, similar to Cubs’, which features 69 wins and 87 losses. The defeat to the leaders was their seventh in the past ten games and 43rd on the road.
