Tigers beat Sox to win 12th in a row
Detroit Tigers have extended their winning streak to 12 successes when they overcame Chicago White Sox yesterday at the US Cellular Field where the clash needed ten innings to provide the winner.
The leaders had a slow start, allowing their opponents to go three points ahead of them after the first two terms. Detroit picked the first lead through Guillen who hit a 414 foot homerun, only to lost the minimal advantage later on. Ramriez doubled to right as De Aza and Morel scored a double for the hosts with Pierre getting to third.
White Sox brought yet another double minutes later through Peirre and Ramirez who made it 4-1 after Konerko singled to center. The next three innings went scoreless for the two sides but the game was far from being over. Martinez singled to center in the sixth term and Cabrera cut the deficit to three points thanks to an error committed by fielder Rios.
Chicago opened back the gap right afterwards through De Aza who scored the fifth one for the home side after Beckham doubled to left. The next two innings also went clean as the game seemed to lead towards a clear win for White Sox.
With a last effort Detroit managed to even the situation in the last round and push the meeting into an extra term. At first, Raburn hit a 380 foot homerun and then Avila, who also hit a 432 foot homerun, and Ordonez made it 5-5. Detroit continued to set the pace even in the tenth one as Rhymes gave his side the 12th straight win after Guillen singled to center.
“We’ve just been on a roll and able to do it with all aspects of the game. The biggest thing is everybody is contributing, so that’s the biggest reason why we’re rolling,” said Avila after the game. Leyland looked the more pleased with the result Guillan showed a great shape after a two week absence on the first list. “He’s been working like everybody else. He’s a proud guy. He’s a pro and he knows he hadn’t played for 10 days. He wants to show people he’s a very capable player. He showed that today,” he said.
Tigers are top spot in the Central with a .584 percentage which features 87 wins and 62 losses, the victory over Sox being their 42nd on the road. As for Chicago, they are 13.5 behind the leaders with a .493 record, the same as Cleveland Indians, which includes 73 wins and 75 losses. The defeat to Detroit was their fourth in a row, sixth in the past ten games and 42nd at home.
Texas Rangers 9 – 1 Cleveland Indians
Texas have improved their positive run to three wins in succession when they eased past Indians last night at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington where the hosts scored their first eight points within the eighth term. The first three innings went scoreless for both sides, but the meeting was far from being a very tight one.
Hamilton brought the first lead for his side in the fourth term after Young doubled to left, while Napoli, who hit a 432 foot homerun, and Young made it 3-0 right afterwards. Furthermore, Torrealba extended the lead to four points after Andrus reached on infield single to pitcher.
Things got much worse for the visitors when Rangers provided a grand slam in the same term. Hamilton hit a 389 foot homerun, involving all Gentry, Kinsler and Andrus for a 8-0 advantage. Indians’ first and only replied came in the fifth inning when Chisenhall fired a 387 footer.
Finally, Kinsler closed the meeting early in the sixth one after hitting a 372 foot homerun which brought the favorites a comprehensive victory in front of a 38,000 warmly crowd. Rangers are top spot in the West with a .570 percentage featuring 85 wins and 64 defeats, the win over Indians being their sixth in the past ten games and 48th at home.
On the other side, Cleveland are third in the Central with a .493 record featuring 72 wins and 74 defeats, the loss in Arlington being their second in a row, seventh in the past ten games and 41st on the road.
Baltimore Orioles 6 – 2 Tampa Bay Rays
Orioles stunned Rays last night at the Oriole Park at Camden Parks where the hosts controlled the entire meeting against the third placed Rays. Reimold opened the clash with a 368 foot homerun hit in the third term, but Orioles would lose the lead in the fourth term.
Joyce doubled to right as Upton and Zobrist scored a double for the visitors, putting them one point ahead of the home side. Baltimore broke back immediately through Davis, who hit a 382 foot homerun, Guerrero and Wieters who propelled their side two points atop.
The next three terms went clean for the two teams, while the eighth one saw the same Baltimore score a couple of more points and draw a clear win. Wieters hit a 399 footer as Guerrero made it 6-1 as just. Orioles have thus started to build streak, the victory over Rays being their second in a row.
They remain though foot of the table in the East with a .405 record including 60 wins and 88 defeats. On the other side, Tampa Bay remain third with a .554 record which incorporates 82 wins and 66 losses, the defeat to Orioles being their second in a row, third in the past ten games and 33rd on the road.
