Trabzonspor shock Inter on Meazza
Trabzonspor had a unforgettable night last night at the Giuseppe Meazza where the Turkish side edged the former European champions 1-0 thanks to Celustka’s late goal.
Unal Karaman’s side, who replaces Fenerbahce in the European competition, were dominated especially in the first half when the Italians mocked plenty of clear occasions. Zarate was the first to miss a golden chance for Inter in the 18th minute. Serkan’s poor clearance allowed the striker to win the ball only to strike it wide with Pazzini yelling at his selfish team mate.
Nagatomo was the first to concede a yellow card after a tough challenge. The Turkish side got their first chance in the 28th minute through Cech who missed the target from good position. Giray Kacar then picked a yellow card for a foul on Wesley Sneijder who failed to shine too bright last night. The Dutch struck the following free kick well wide as Inter were losing some concentration.
Zarate was picked on the edge of the box but his finish was saved by keeper Zengin with ease. Pazzini tried his luck with a dangerous shot straight at the keeper in the 33rd minute, while Zarate followed him with yet another well placed shot into the hands of Zengin.
Inter won a free kick five minutes later which Sneijder took it well but straight at the same keeper who managed to keep the sheet clean throughout the entire meeting. Zarate, too, conceded a yellow card with four minutes left following a tough challenge on Paulo Henrique. The first half finished with Cambiasso’s powerful shot which reached the back of the net, the first half going scoreless for both teams.
The second part started with Inter’s free kick which Sneijder delivered well wide of the target. Alanzinho picked his first yellow card in the 54th minute for late tackle. Inter made a couple of changes just one minute later as new coach Gasperini replaced Obi and Pazzini with Alvarez and Milito respectively.
The 62nd minute saw Alanzinho try his luck with a shot from range to which keeper Julio Cesar was equal. Inter missed another big chance in the 64th minute through Zarate who finished an impressive action wide. Alanzinho made way for Sapara in the 65th minute as Kraman was strengthening his offensive.
Both Altintop and Cech conceded a yellow card apiece in the next minute while Inter were still struggling for an opener. Milito first shined in the 72nd minute when the newly introduced missed a couple of shots, but the scoreboard remained blank.
Trabzonspor made another change in the 75th minute when Vittek replaced Paulo Hernique in attack. Three minutes later the Turkish side broke the ice and opened the score through Celutska following a very poor defending from the European champions. Altintop hit the crossbar but the rebound was converted into a personal exquisite and a superb finish by Celtuska who struck the ball between defender’s legs and into the far post.
Gasperini’s reaction came as just with Inter replacing Zarate with Coutinho one minute later. Alvarez missed the target in the 85th minute as Inter were trying their luck from all positions. Trabzonspor replaced former Real Madrid player Altintop with Aykut Akgun as a wasting time move.
Coutinho and Alvarez finished the game with two more dangerous shots of the target. Despite the loss, coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who was appointed as Inter coach at the end of the last season, looked pleased with his side’s showing.
“It was an undeserved defeat. We are really disappointed because we played some good football tonight. We have definitely been unlucky. I’m quite satisfied that the team performed on the pitch, but unfortunately we missed too many chances and conceded in the only one they created,” he said.
On the other side, Trabzonspor are lucky to lead the group B with three points after French champions Lille OSC were drawn by CSKA Moscow last night at the Lille Metropole. Inter Milan are foot of the table with a lot of pressure on them. The Italians will next visit CSKA Moscow on September 27 when Trabzonspor also host Lille.
