City Snatch Late Win Against Villarreal
Aguero scores City winner against Villarreal
Sergio Aguero brought Manchester City three precious points last night at the Etihad stadium where the Blues edged Villarreal 2-1 thanks to a last minute goal scored by the newly arrived Argentine who gave Roberto Mancini’s side the first UEFA Champions League win.
Cani scored an early opener for the Spanish side, while unfortunate Marchena sent the ball into the own goal minutes before the break. Aguero scored the winner in the third minute of the stoppage time, giving City a lot of hopes for the second place in the group.
A poor control of the ball from De Jong allowed the Yellow Submarine score the first goal in the fourth minute through Rossi who was picked on the edge of the box, beat his marks but was denied by the keeper Hart whose poor save was converted home by Cani from seven yards.
The Spaniards dominated the early minutes of the meeting but they could only score once throughout it. Juan Carlos’ side missed a great chance in the ninth minute through Cani whose finish was blocked by a vigilant Yaya Toure who hindered the visitors of a much more promising start and of scoring a second one.
Perez’s dangerous cross was headed away by Kompany one minute later as City were still under pressure. Manchester broke back in the 14th minute when Nasri struck it just over the bar following a good move in front by Toure and Kolarov. That was also the moment the hosts started to trouble Lopez’s goal.
Mancini’s side missed yet another opportunity two minutes later through Dzeko who was forced to commit an error at the byline with free Silva waiting for the finish. City then earned a corner through Toure and Kolarov who combined in dangerous area, only to be denied by the Spanish defence. The same Kolarov mocked a golden chance in the 20th minute following a free kick which the left defender struck it goalwards.
Catala rescuied his side from a leveler in the 26th minute when Zabaleta was perfectly picked by Silva before having his cross deflected away by the defender. Catala picked his first yellow card in the 34th minute for time wasting.
Johnson was gifterd the ball in dangerous area in the 38th minute but his service for Silva was intercepted by Rodriguez at the death in what could have been the leveler for City. With five minutes left, injured Johnson made way for Gareth Barry. Three minutes later City leveled the score thanks to a poor defending from Marcheno who deflected the ball into the own goal following a cross from the left which was meant to reach Dzeko.
One minute before the break Dzeko edged the second one for the Blues, but the Bosnian’s finish was stopped by the keeper. The half time went 1-1 as City were looking for more. The same Dzeko neared the second goal two minutes into the second part following a great action from the home side the finish of which saw the striker beat the offside trap only to be denied by Lopez.
Villarreal also missed a good chance in the 52nd minute when Rossi had his effort parried by Hart who gave the away side a corner. Toure then picked Dzeko on the edge of the box but the finish did not change the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Mancini was thinking of attack solutions. The 62nd minute saw the Italian manager replace De Jong with Sergio Aguero in what would prove to be a n inspired move.
Rossi conceded his first yellow in the 67th minute when the referee cautioned him for diving. Kolarov tried his luck with a shot form outside the box which the vigilant Lopez denied at the death. Sergio Aguero led a lovely build up for City in the 77th minute but the finish saw Dzeko shoot it wide.
Villarreal replaced Perex with Mubarak in the 80th minute, while Cani made way for Gaspar five minutes later. On the other side, City introduced Nasri for Milner. Kolarov perfectly served Dzeko with a cross from the left which the free Bosnian headed wide.
Coach Garrido made the third move with two minutes left, introducing Guillon for De Guzman. City mocked a couple of back to back actions in the 89th minute. Silva failed to control the ball inside the six yard box, while Zabaleta had his effort stopped by Lopez.
Gaspar conceded a yellow card for time wasting in the second minute of the five minute stoppage time. But just one minute later, the hosts were given the winner by Augero following a great action on the right which saw Zabaleta beat the offside trap to deliver a low cross inside the box which the Argnetine converted hit home from close range.
City won but sit one point behind the second placed Napoli and three behind leaders Bayern Munich who drew the Italians the same day at the Allianz Arena. Villarreal will next host Manchester on November 2 at the El Madrigal stadium.
Said Mancini of the next game away in Spain: “It will be a different game, a different test. The good thing is that we will go there with three wins in succession and in a confident frame of mind.” He also looked aware of the importance of the three points won last night. “It would have been very difficult to qualify without that goal. But I thought we deserved to win and had many chances before that one,” he added.
