Beltre hit three HRs as Texas advance
Rangers managed to score a couple of points early in the meeting, advantage they would keep until the end of the clash. On the other side, Rays were not able to at least even the result, being dominated throughout the entire game. Kinsler opened the game with a 385 foot homer hit in the first term. Beltre also hit one in the second inning as Rangers were already looking favorites for the next round, though they only survived thanks to these homers.
Rays cut the deficit in the second term through Rodriguez who made it 1-2 after Joyce doubled to center. The third inning went scoreless for both sides as Texas were struggling to stay atop of their opponents. Beltre then hit yet another 276 foot homer to make it 3-1 and keep Rangers’ qualification chances alive. Tampa Bay answered with a second one right afterwards. Kotchman singled to center and Rodriguez brought the second point for the hosts.
The next two terms also went blank for the two teams but Texas still proved to be the better side in St. Petersburg. Beltre hit his third homer in the seventh round, scoring the most precious point for the visitors who would only allow Rays to score once. The eighth term went scoreless, while the last one saw the same double Kotchman and Rodriguez try to resuscitate their side for a late comeback.
Kotchman singled to right and the latter one scored a third meaningless point for the second best side in the East. Texas finished the series with a 3-2 lead as Rays are out of the playoffs.
Said Rangers’ man of the match, Belte: “From my point of view, Texas gave me the best chance to put a ring on my finger and I am just two steps away from it. Hopefully that happens.”
Pitcher Derek Holland also looked pleased with Texas performance, though he realizes this is not the end of the road. “It’s and I am just two steps away from it. Hopefully that happens. We want to win the whole thing, and that’s what we’re going to try to do from here.”
Rangers finished the regular season with a .593 record featuring 96 wins and 66 defeats, while Tampa Bay impressed with a late comeback which saw them take the second place from favorites Boston Red Sox. Rays joined the playoffs with a .562 record which includes 91 wins and 71 losses.
The same day, Philadelphia Phillies edged St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 away to take a 2-1 lead, New York Yankees crashed Detroit Tigers 10-1 and pushed the series into a five game decider, while Arizona Diamondbacks eased past Milwaukee Brewers to make it 2-1.
