Murray beats Nadal to claim fourth season title
World number four Andy Murray has won the fourth title of the season after overcoming Rafa Nadal in a three set epic, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The Scott managed to come from behind and overcome a one set deficit set very easily by the top seeder who did not seem to have any problem in taking the victory. Nadal controlled the entire opener, breaking his opponent once amid the term. On the other side, Murray also built a break point but the Scott failed to close the gap, losing the first term in just over half an hour.
But the second set saw Murray play perhaps his best tennis, breaking the world champion twice for a four game lead. He then pushed the game into a third set decider he would dominate, as well. Not only did he control the round, but Murray even managed to keep the sheet throughout the entire term, breaking the unrecognizable Nadal three times.
Nadal was given no chance to break in the third set and could only save a break point, conceding the victory in over two hours. Murray finished the game with a 61 first serve percentage, a 73 service one and six aces.
As for Nadal, his showing featured three aces, a 52 service percentage, a poor 27 return one, three aces and just a break point conversion in six tries. The head to head series between the two has gone 13-5 with Nadal’s last win dating from this year’s US Open Grand Slam.
Said Murray after the game: “To only lose four points – and against Rafa – will never happen again. I’ve hit the ball like that before but for such a long period, that’s definitely the first time. I’ve given myself the target of ending the year at number three in the world so hopefully I can carry on that form.”
The two have already lined up to the Shanghai Masters which takes place between October 9 and 16.
