Syrians Protesting Against Assad

Syrians Protesting Against Assad
Syrian security forces are reported to have raided on Thursday morning the northwestern town of Binnish in pursuit of defectors from the army. Fire was trade between the military forces, who used machine guns, and the defectors, leaving at least one dead and several injured, according to the Syrian human rights activists.
The activists reported that the Syrian military came to the town of Binnish, in the Ildib province, supported by tanks and armored vehicles and that as soon as they arrived machine guns and shelling were heard around the city.
As the military entered the city explosion could be heard and the machine guns, and the reports say that the troops also stormed a village nearby, and a village in Homs province, where they have arrested 19 people.
The continuation of the crackdown is indicative of the fact that Bashar al-Assad cannot meet the requirement of the two states that supported him, China and Russia, who asked him during this week to put an end to the violence and implement the measures that would lead to a transition in the country.
Russia and China vetoed last week an European-drafted resolution at the United Nations Security Council by which Syria would have been warned to stop the crackdown or face sanctions.
The Russian officials explained that the language of the resolution was rather loose and allowed interpretations that could lead to believe that the UN has authorized a possible military intervention in Syria.
Russia reminded what it called the bitter experience in Libya, where the UN resolution led to the direct intervention of the NATO troops in the northern African country. Russia has been one of the steady critics of the intervention in Libya.

China in turn said that the resolution would have created a tension in the region, which would have brought no good to the embattled Syria.
The two countries came under very hard criticism from the Western countries, which claimed that the veto was no more than a means to protect the businesses the two countries were conducting with the Syrian regime, alluding to the arms deals of Russia with Syria.
Russia and China showed that their support could run thin in the period to come however, as the Russians warned Assad to stop violence or step down, and the Chinese told him to make good on the promise he had made to stop the crackdown.
Bashar al-Assad promised last Sunday he would give the Syrians a new constitution. He announced that by the end of the year a commission would have drafted the new constitution and that it would be voted by the parliament soon after. No one said what the new constitution would look like.
On Wednesday, Bashar’s supporters staged a huge rally in the center of the capital city, chanting and shouting that he was the president and that they would support him. The rally was said to have been attended by some tens of thousands.
It is also believed that the people in Damascus came to support him because the capital’s center has not been touched somehow by what goes on in the rest of the country. It is also possible that some people in Syria really believe Assad when he tells them that the turmoil in the country was caused by some international conspiracy aimed at removing him from office.
The fact that the Syrian army is now meeting military resistance because of the defectors who sided with the protestors and bring the protests some military discipline and fire power caused Assad to say that he was indeed under attack by conspirationists, but also determined some experts in Middle East policies to consider that Syria may slide slowly into a civil war.
