Tibetan PM Demands International Probe Into Chinese Crackdown
Lobsang Sangay
Tibetan prime minister in exile Lobsang Sangay on Thursday demanded that an international inquiry be launched into the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Tibetan protesters earlier this week, which, according to unconfirmed reports, claimed the life of at least one person and injured many.
He called for a worldwide vigil on February 8 in order to condemn the violence against the Tibetans in the province of Sichuan and Tibet proper. He accused China of having killed six Tibetans and of firing indiscriminately into the people who were peacefully protesting in the regions that are under the rule of the Communist country.
Sangay said that it was this kind of crackdown on the people and the suppressive policies of the Communist regime that have made the anti-Chinese feeling grow that big since the massive protests in 2008.
The prime minister urged China to pay attention to the 16 monks and nuns that set themselves ablaze last year in a bid to remind the Chinese that they need their cultural and religious autonomy.
He demanded the United Nations to send observers to Tibet and also that the international media get access to the area so that they may report what is going on there. In the Indian city of Dharamsala, where the Tibetan government is in exile, the monks lit candles in memory of those who were killed by the Chinese security forces.
One of the Tibetan activists said that the protest against Chinese rule would continue and that the Tibetan people were shocked to learn that innocent were killed as they were peacefully protesting for their rights.
One of the Tibetan writers accuses the storming by the security forces of the protesters as an act of desperation on their part, and accuses China of attempting to erase Tibetan identity by flooding the place with Chinese Han people.
Beijing, which admits to have killed one “rioter,” adding that the police opened fire only after the protesters began using stones, knives and gasoline against the police, considers that the regime is the one to have put the Tibetan region out of the middle ages realities and modernized it.
