Tracy’s review of Forever and a Day by Delilah Marvelle
Roderick Gideon Tremayne, the recently appointed Duke of Wentworth, never expected to find himself in New York City, tracking down a mysterious map important to his late mother. And he certainly never expected to be injured, only to wake up with no memory of who he is. But when he sees the fiery-haired beauty who's taken it upon herself to rescue him, suddenly his memory is the last thing on his mind.
Georgia Milton, the young head of New York's notorious Forty Thieves, feels responsible for the man who was trying to save her bag from a thief. But she's not prepared for the fierce passion he ignites within her. When his memory begins to return, her whole world is threatened, and Roderick must choose between the life he forgot and the life he never knew existed.…
Georgia is minding her own business, walking down the street in New York when she sees a beautiful man. She happens to catch his eye but since she’s a laundress and he’s an aristo (she can tell just by the way he dresses) she tries to walk away. He waylays here and asks her to coffee. When she refuses and walks off her reticule is stolen and the British aristo runs off to catch the thief. Georgia runs after the pair but when she eventually finds one of them it is the aristo and he’s been hit by public transportation. She gets him to the hospital but 9 days later she’s stuck. The aristo is being released but they don’t know what to do with him because though he’s lost his memory he is physically fine. Guilt eats Georgia up and she ends up taking him to board with her while the doctor agrees to put out word of his existence in the hopes that someone will know who he is.
Georgia takes the man who thinks he’s Robinson Crusoe home to her tenement and tries to teach him the ways of life in the poorest part of New York. While the pair go about their daily lives they form a connection and eventually discover that they are totally in love with each other. When Robinson’s father finds him and he discovers he is the son of a Duke (not a Duke himself as the blurb mentions) he still has no idea what he life was like before 12 days earlier. He does know that he can’t live without Georgia and wants to take her back to London with him to marry. His father, as is to be expected, is totally against the marriage but Robinson, whose real name is Roderick, feels sure that once his father gets to know Georgia he will love her as much as he does. But life doesn’t always work out the way we plan and Roderick finally realizes that Georgia, no matter how much he wants her to, would never fit in with the London peerage.
Behind Roderick's back Georgia and the Duke – who she wins over – devise a plan that will make everyone happy. She will be formed into a lady and then will hit London and the Season like something they’ve never seen.
I love amnesiac stories and this was no different – for the first part of the book. While Robinson was with Georgia in Five Points and living the low life I thought the story just flourished. It was rich with love and passion and was just a page turner. Marvelle described Five Points and the people who lived there so very well and I got what I felt was a true view of the times back then and how very hard they were. I loved Robinson and Georgia’s characters as I thought they were richly described and I felt like I knew them.
The book however took a turn when the plan that the Duke and Georgia came up with went into action. We saw just a bit of the turn from the Five Points laundress into a lady but it wasn’t enough. Then Georgia got to London and though we were shown a bit of interaction between Georgia and Roderick that part was extremely abbreviated as well. I felt like the last portion of the story was cut off before I could get a good feel of the romance being reignited after a long absence and it was a bit disappointing.
Despite my disappointments the Epilogue was great and the writing was up to par with what we know and love of Delilah Marvelle. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.
