Davutoglu spoke before the departure to Washington, where he is to meet Hillary Clinton, saying that the Syrian situation has gone too far for the Syrians to solve it themselves, and that it may only be settled by broad international consensus.
Davutoglu is advocating a “most-broad based” coalition which should include members of the UN Security Council, Organization of the Islamic Conference, and Arab states. Speaking of the visit made by Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday to Damascus, Davutoglu warned that the promises Assad made the Russian foreign minister were heard by Turkey and the neighboring states but never fulfilled.
Sergei Lavrov went to Damascus on Tuesday, following Russia’s veto in the UN Security Council on Saturday on a new resolution on Syria, with the mission of convincing Assad to do something about the violence surge that has engulfed the country for the last 11 months.
Assad promised to end violence and to organize a constitutional referendum, a promise that has been heard over the last year. He also asked Russia to broker talks with the opposition, something Russia may not do, since its international stance on Syria has corroded its credibility in the eyes of the people.
