Chinese Riot Police
Security has been tight in this region after the riot in 2009 between the Muslim Uyghurs and the Chinese Han migrants. About 2,000 people were killed on that occasion, most of them Han.
Chinese agency Xinhua said that the attackers killed 12 people and that the police shot in retaliation 2 of the aggressors. Xinhua did not offer any reason for this violence and the reports are difficult to verify independently.
The death toll is the highest since the violence in Kasghar and Hotan, two cities to the north and south of Yecheng. The Xinjiang region is populated with a Muslim Uyghur population which speaks a Turkic language, different from the Chinese.
The people in this province, called by the Uyghur nationalists East Turkmenistan, protest against what they believe to be a program of the central government to alter the ethnic composition of the region by bringing in families of Chinese Han. In fact, most of the attacks with knives in this province are perpetrated against Chinese Han people.
The World Uyghur Congress said that seven of those who died were police officers, and that tensions have sparked between the people in the province and the police as the police started up a 100-day criminal round up. The congress said that the police officers received quota and awards for arresting Uyghur, which determined them to arrest many for different reasons.
Xinjiang is a province that lies in the neighborhood of the restive Tibet and Sichuan, where the Tibetan people are fighting to keep their own culture and religion and use self-immolation as a form of revolt against the Chinese government.
