Attack at Jewish School

A gunman on a motorbike on Monday shot dead four people, including three children, at a Jewish school in Toulouse, days after three soldiers were killed in similar shootings in southeast of France. A 30-year Hebrew teacher was killed, two of his children aged three and six, and another child. A 10-year-old was wounded. Three soldiers, one Caribbean and two Muslims, were also killed in two shootings. An anti-terrorism investigation has been launched into all three attacks, though it was not clear whether they were somehow connected.

President Sarkozy and his contender, Francois Hollande, who are in the campaign for presidential elections, rushed to the scene of the attack on the Jewish school. Sarkozy said that the authorities did not know who the killers were, but that everything would be done for them to be apprehended.

He added that France should not give in to terror, and that the people here should be allowed to worship in synagogues, mosques or churches. The prosecution said that it was the same firearm caliber that was used in the attack of the three soldiers, but could not say whether it was the same weapon.

The school was cordoned off and the security was tighten at all Jewish schools in France, where a 600,000 community, the largest in Europe, resides.

The incumbent president called the attack on the Jewish school a “national tragedy,” and assured the parents that barbarism, savagery, and hate would not win. Analysts fear that the three attacks may bring security into the focus of the presidential campaign, which was dominated until now by taxation and other economic matters.
