Blast in Jos
A suicide car bomber on Sunday detonated his charge at a Catholic church in the Nigerian province of Jos, during the Mass, killing at least 10 people. Security forces at the gate of the church’s compound stopped the suspicious car and the bomber detonated his explosive in the altercation with the troops.
The blast damaged the church’s roof, blew out the windows, and destroyed a portion of the fence surrounding the church. The bombing sparked violent retaliation in Jos, as young people burnt down homes while the soldiers that were guarding the city were said to have opened fire in the neighborhoods.
No group claimed responsibility for the attacks yet. The Islamist sect Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for similar attacks in the past, including on Christmas Eve, when the attack produced 80 dead. The same group claimed responsibility for the attack on February 26, which killed three and wounded 38.
At least 1,000 people died in attacks staged in the Jos province of the Plateau state, all killed by religious clashes.
Nigeria is the most populous country of the African continent, and is divided between the two largest religious groups, Christian and Islam. In order to avoid the two religions from ending up in conflict, the political system in Nigeria states that the presidency of the country must go to members of one religion each term, by rotation.
Boko Haram (who translates “Education of the West is a sin”) is an organization that militates for an Islamic state in the Muslim part of Nigeria. The group emerged in 2009, and staged attacks against both Christians and the members of the Islamic community, which are accustomed to the Western habits.
