Ugandan PM Amama Mbabazi
Joseph Kony was placed under an international arrest warrant in 2005, and is held responsible for the abduction of 66,000 children, who became slaves or soldiers. Two million people were displaced by the actions of the LRA in Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.
By this video, Uganda wants to show that Kony is not in the country and that a search is being under way, with Uganda itself as spearhead of the action.
In a 9-minute video posted on Youtube, Ugandan prime minister Amama Mbabazi says that a very important thing was left out of “Kony 2012,” that is that he is not in Uganda. He insisted that Uganda was a modern, developing country, and that the American video did not represent the current situation of the country.
Kony 2012 was viewed by 80 million people, and raised awareness about the atrocities committed by Kony, with a focus on the exploitation of children for military purposes and for sex slavery.
Mbabazi said that the government of Uganda did not need a “slick video on Youtube” to know what it must do about Kony, that it was perfectly aware of the amount of damage he has created to the country’s image.
On Twitter the prime minister invited those targeted by Invisible Children in their video to come and visit Uganda to see for themselves.
The Ugandan defense minister said that a four-nation military force has been established to hunt Kony down. He added that the fugitive’s power has been reduced to some 200 to 250 fighters operating in the jungle.
The fighters are believed to be scattered in groups of 10 to 20 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Central African Republic.
Lord’s Resistance Army is said to be an organization that aims at creating a theocratic state in Uganda, based on the Ten Commandments of the Bible and the Acholi nationalism.
