Aquilani set for Milan move
Liverpool have loaned Alberto Aquilani to Italian champions AC Milan who are to use the 27 year old for one season. The midfielder has become the fourth Reds player to leave the Anfield on a loan deal.
Aquilani, who had previously played for another Italian champions Juventus, is to prolong his journey away from Liverpool with at least 12 more months. Said Damien Comolli, Liverpool’s director of football: “I want to pay tribute to the way Alberto has conducted himself during these discussions. Throughout the entire process, his only desire has been to play football and he has put this ahead of any other considerations and at personal cost to himself. We wish him well for the season ahead.”
Rossoneri lost cornerstone and veteran Andre Pirlo who signed Juventus, are now looking forward to strengthening their middle department. Aquilani made 33 appearances in Serie A with the Old Lady for which he also scored a couple of goals.
His Italian experience also includes seven years spent with AS Roma between 2002 and 2009, side for which he scored nine goals in 102 selections. Roma remains the only side with which he won three important trophies, including two Italian Cups and one Super Cup.
Apart from Aquilani, the Reds have also loaned Dani Pachecho who joined Atletico Madrid and Gerardo Bruno who was loaned to Blackpool. Liverpool signed Jordan Henderson from Sunderland against a 20 million pound amount and Charlie Adam of Blackpool on an eight million pound deal.
AC Milan won the Italian double last season, including the Serie A title as well as the Italian Super Cup after defeating arch rivals Inter 2-1 in China earlier this month. Allgeri’s side are to make their debut in the new season away against Cagliari whom they face on Saturday. The first derby takes place on September 11 against Lazio, while the first meeting against Inter is scheduled on January 15.
Milan have just been drawn a tough group in the next term’s UEFA Champions League as Rossoneri are expected to face defending champions FC Barcelona, but also tough BATE Borisov of Belarus and Viktoria Plzen of Czech Republic.
The first European game is scheduled on September 13 when they meet the Catalans on Camp Nou. Apart from Aquilani’s move to San Siro, AC Milan were very close to signing Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka, but also their former start Kaka of Real Madrid and Tottenham’s cornerstone Gareth Bale.
Concerning the out moves, Pato had also been credited with a move at Chelsea, but during Carlo Ancelotti’s era. Given the Italian’s departure, the Brazilian was no longer considered a main priorty for the Blues.
