Schumacher quickest in first practice
Schumacher, who has not grabbed a podium place so far this season, spent 13 laps on the wet track, while his team mate made 15. Jenson Button, winner of this term’s Canadian and Hungarian Grand Prix, was 8,385 seconds slower than Schumacher, spending just eight laps on the track. Current world champion Sebastian Vettel, who is chasing his seventh season title in Belgium, set a 9,397 second gap against the leader, being followed by Lewis Hamilton of McLaren who was 9,946 seconds behind Schumacher.
Force India impressed in the first session with a sixth fastest driver as Adrian Sutil came right behind Hamilton after 18 laps. Ferrari had their fastest driver on Felipe Massa, who came 10,373 seconds slower than the fastest driver, while Williams had Rubens Barrichello eighth with a 11,036 second gap.
Toro Rosso also had a reasonable day as Jaime Alguersuari came ninth, more than 12 second behind Schumacher. Kamui Kobayashi and Fernando Alonso have also set a 12+ second gap, while Sauber’s Sergio Perez, Jamo Truli and Sebastien Buemi came all beyond 13 seconds.
One of the biggest surprises was set by Mark Webber who was the 16th fastest drive at the Spa, setting a 15,437 second gap, being preceded by Paulo Maldonado. Timo Glock came 17,923 seconds behind Schumacher, while four other drivers set a 18+ second gap, including Hispania’s Liuzzi, d’Ambrosio of Virgin, Force India’s Di Resta and Lotus’ Chandhok.
Finally, Renault grabbed back to back positions with Vitaly Petrov coming 19,264 seconds slower than Schumacher and 0,739 seconds faster than team mate Senna. Hispania’s Ricciardo came 24th with a 20,578 second gap.
Button declared this week Vettel could lose control if put under pressure. The German has proved to be pretty vulnerable when he misses the pole position, something which might cost him plenty of failures from now on, according to the Briton for whom the season has not ended yet.
“It will be interesting to see what his way of thinking is over the next few races because he says he wants to go all out and win them all, which is great. That’s exactly what we want. So hopefully that’s going to be the case for the whole season,” said Button, who is fifth in the standings with 134 points, exactly 200 behind the world champion.
Button has also picked a second-place in Malaysia, failed to grab a point in Great Briton and Germany. He is ready though to claim his second straight title in Belgium where McLaren will chase their fifth title of the year.
