Detroit beat Rays to extend streak
Tigers have cemented their leading position in the Central Conference with a 69th win season after defeating Tampa Bay 5-2 last night at the Tropicana Field.
Despite a poor start, which saw the away side led 0-1, Detroit managed to come from behind and set a five point rally the Rays couldn’t break until the end. Joyce opened the meeting with a 408 foot homerun, but the hosts could only hold the minimal advantage for one more inning. Avila broke back in the second round with a 372 foot homerun, being followed by Cabrera who overturned the result earlier than expected.
The next five innings went scoreless for both sides as the clash seemed to be a tight one. Peralta singled to left in the eighth term allowing Boesch and Young to make it 4-1 with Cabrera getting to third and Peralta advancing on throw. Even more than that, Detroit were given a four point lead in the ninth inning through Kelly who fired a 378 foot homerun.
Finally, Longoria hit a 375 footer right afterwards in what was a second consolation point for the hosts. Detroit have improved their season record to .543, which includes 69 wins and 58 defeats, the victory over Rays being their fourth in a row, seventh in the past ten games and 32nd on the road. On the other side, Rays remain third in the East, 8.5 behind leaders New York Yankees, with a .548 percentage featuring 69 wins and 57 defeats. The loss to Detroit was their third in the past ten games and 29th at home.
Said Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon  after the game: “It was a well-played game. They just beat us tonight.” On the other side, manager Jim Leyland looked pleased with his side’s performance. “We thought runs were going to be stingy and they were. Tonight, Justin got the better of him (Niemann). He’s a real good pitcher on a real good roll right now.”
Pittsburgh Pirates 1 – 8 Milwaukee Brewers
Brewers thwarted Pirates on Monday afternoon at the PNC Park in their first meeting of the day. The hosts were put into a two point lead early in the second half, but the clear victory was grabbed after a crazy end which saw the two sides score seven points each other.
Narveson singled to right as Betancourt and Kottaras put the visitors into a quick lead in the fourth term, while Hart made it three in the eighth one, after Betancourt doubled to left. Counsell then singled to center allowing the same Betancourt to extend the lead to four points and thus draw a clear win at the PNC.
McGehee and Cousnell made things look clear as possible in the same inning, scoring the last points onf the term for Brewers. On the other side, Pirates could only cut the deficit to five points through ludwick who hit a 432 footer right afterwards. Finally, Milwaukee ended the game with Braun’s 374 footer and Hairston’s eighth point, both points score din the last inning.
Milwaukee remain top spot though with a .593 record including 77 wins and 53 defeats, while Pittsburgh are 15.5 behind them, with a .472 record which features 60 wins and 67 defeats.
Cleveland Indians 2 – 3 Seattle Mariners
Mariners edged Indians on Monday night at the Progressive Field where the first four points were scored within the first two terms and the winner in the last one. Suzuki was the first to bring the lead for Seattle in the first inning, hitting a 406 homerun. Ryan then struck out swinging as Wells doubled the advantage after Kennedy stole second.
Indians managed to break back and even the situation just minutes later. Marson singled to center as Santana cut the deficit with Hannahan getting to third. Carrera then singled to left allowing Hannahan to level the situation and threaten with a comeback.
Unfortunately, the hosts couldn’t set the pace anymore, permitting the Mariners to score the winner in the past term through Olivo who gave his side a big win after Gutierrez hit a sacrifice fly to center. Despite the win, Seattle remain bottom of the table in the West with a .429 record including 54 wins and 72 losses.
The victory over the Indians was their fourth in the past ten games and 22nd on the road. Concerning Cleveland’s route, they have gone .500 so far this season, record which incorporates 62 wins and 62 losses. The defeat to Seattle was their fourth in a row, sixth in the past ten games and 26th at home.
Chicago Cubs 0 – 5 Atlanta Braves
Braves are moving from good to better as they have extended the winning streak to five successes when they eased past and blanked Cubs on Monday at the Wrigley Field where things went perfectly for the visitors.

Chicago, by contrast, lie second from the bottom in the Central, 20 gamesback behind Brewers, with a .438 record including 56 wins and 72 losses. The defeat to Atlanta was their second in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 35th at home.
Washington Nationals 4 – 1 Arizona Diamondbacks
Washington have picked their second straight win against Arizona whom they defeated on Monday at the Nationals Park, thanks to a remarkable first half which saw them score three of their four points only in the fourth inning.
The opening round went scoreless for both sides, while the second one brought the hosts the minimal advantage thanks to Werth who scored the first point after Gomes singled to center. The third term also went clean, but Washington still looked like the main favorites of the meeting.
Werth then fired a 378 foot homerun, being followed by Zimmerman and Morse who scored the last points for their side in the fourth inning. Arizona were only allowed to score a late consolation through Blanco who closed the meeting with a 385 foot homerun.
Nationals are third in the East with a .493 record, which still keeps them 20 gamesback behind leaders Phillies, including 62 wins and 64 defeats. The victory over D-backs was their second in a row, sixth in the past ten games and 37th at the Nationals Park.
Concerning Arizona’s route, they have gone .539 so far this season, but remain top spot in the West with a .539 percentage which features 69 wins and 59 losses. The defeat to Washington was their sixth in a row, sixth in the past ten games and 33rd on the road where they have switched .500. That has also allowed San Francisco Giants to close the gap to one gameback as they are now threatening with the leading position.
