Edin Dzeko has become Manchester City’s top scorer after hitting four goals against Tottenham Hotspur whom Roberto Mancini’s side defeated 5-1 on Sunday at the White Hart Lane.
Sergio Aguero scored his third goal for City after an hour of play, having become the second best scorer at the Eastlands. Spurs were only allowed to score a consolation point through Kaboul who scored the fifth goal of the night. Nasri also made an impressive debut with the Blues, delivering three assists, having become a cornerstone for Robert Mancini’s squad.
David Silva had the first chance to open the score. Nasri picked the Spaniard on the edge of the box, but his strike was saved by the keeper, while the follow up did not bring anything, either. Spurs first conceded the yellow card in the 11th minute through Assou Ekotto who took down Augero in what could have been a big danger for the hosts.
Friedel then denied Silva for the second time, while Gareth Barry picked his first yellow right afterwards for a trip on Van der Vaart. The Dutch tried his luck with a 30 yard free kick which went just over the bar. Pablo Zabaleta and Augero were the next to get booked by the referee for a tough challenge on Gareth Bale and a handball respectively.
The 27th minute saw Bale miss a golden chance. Crouch deflected Lennon’s cross as far as the left winger who struck it well wide in what should have been a more difficult test for the keeper, if not an opener. Dzeko opened the score in the 35th minute following a great combinative play which saw Nasri feed the Bosnian inside the box for a great finish.
Tottenham broke back in the 40th minute through Crouch who mocked a golden chance after being perfectly served by Bale. Just one minute later, City were given the second goal on the White Lane. The same Nasi found the same Dzeko with a super cross whose header reached the top scorner of the goal for a more comprehensive lead. The half time went 2-0 to City as Spurs were still in big crisis.
As for the second term, it started with a couple of changes for Spurs. Harry Redknapp introduced Tom Huddlestone and Jermain Defoe for Niko Kranjcar and Lennon respectively. But just ten minutes into the second part, City made it 3-0 through Dzeko who completed his hat-trick with yet another sensational finish from range. Five minutes later, Nasri fed Aguero on the left, who beat both his mark and the keeper from a pretty tight angle.
The 65thminute saw both Mancini and Redknapp introduce a couple of players. Zabaleta departed for Micah Richards, while Jake Livermore replaced Modric for Spurs. Three minutes later Tottenham broke back for good as Kaboul headed it home, following a perfect corner from the left.
Stefan Savic replaced Aguero in the 75th minute as the Italian manager was trying to defend the result. But still, City were chasing their fifth one, which eventually came from the same Dzeko who closed the victory with a super strike into the far top corner.
City won and goes second in the standings with nine points won in three games. Untied are just above them thanks to a better goal-difference. On contrast, Tottenham lie foot of the table with zero points in two games, sitting alongside Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion.
Said Spurs’ boss Redknapp after the game: “For 35 minutes there was nothing in the game, we had as many chances as they did. We started the game brightly and had some good opportunities. We were right in the game, there were chances galore out there but we couldn’t convert one… “It was disappointing but I’m sure we’ll turn it around.”
City will next play Wigan Athletics, while Tottenham travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers next Saturday.
