Cilic has made a three set progress at the US Open after defeating crowd favorite Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 in the opener. The 27th seed needed two hours and a half to oust the American and will next meet either Bernard Tomic or Michael Yani.
Cilic broke his opponent seven times and conceded four services, finishing the game with a 48 return percentage and 39 winners. The Croatian won the opener in nearly half an hour but have some hard times in the next two. Ryan managed to threaten with a tie break in the second set but a late break propelled the favorite two a two set advantage.
As for the second set, it saw the same Cilic take the control of the game despite being pushed into a breaker for the first time. He eventually won the decider after a tight late run, going 8-6 ahead of the losing pace Harrison.
Harrison, who committed seven double faults, left with a 43 first serve percentage and a straight set loss, which allows the seeder to progress through and face yet another unseed. Neither of his two potential opponents is among the top seeds.
The same day, ninth favorite Tomas Berdych eased past Romain Jouan of France in three sets 6-2, 7-6, 6-1 and nearly two hours. It took the Czech less than half an hour to clinch the opener, and nearly one hour to win the second set breaker. Berdych, who is chasing his first Grand Slam trophy of career, broke the French five times and only conceded one service.
After a strong start, Berdych was pushed into the tie break in the second one, run he eventually won at four thanks to a late mini break. As for the decider, it was dominated by the same favorite who managed to go five games ahead of Jouan, winning the third term in just over half an hour. Berdych will next meet either Fabio Fognini of Italy or Horacio Zeballos.
Eighth seed Mardy Fish has also made an easy progress in the US Open opener, defeating Tobias Kamke 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Fish converted seven out of eight break points, conceding just one service to the German who was kept adrift of the crowd favorite throughout the entire meeting.
The American hit 28 winners and finished the game with a 59 first serve percentage and a 52 return percentage, compared to his opponent’s 55 first serve percentage, ten winners and 29 return percentage.
Finally, Janko Tipsarevic ousted Augustin Gensse 6-2, 7-5, 6-0 after converting six out of 14 break points, to clinch the win in nearly two hours. Gensse created four break points but couldn’t convert any of them. He had both a poor start and finish, his best performance including a remarkable late effort in the second set which saw him threaten with a tie break.
Unfortunately, the French conceded a late break, losing plenty of pace, especially in the third term. Tipsarevic will next meet either Philipp Petzschner or Albert Ramos.
Top seed Djokovic is to make his debut in New York against Conor Niland, while second favorite Rafa Nadal, who is chasing his second straight trophy in United States is to face Andrey Golubev. As for Federer, the Swiss, who is at his 13th appearance at the US Open, will play Santaigo Giraldo in the first round.
The 30 year old has already declared he hopes to provide a remarkable showing at the American Slam, trophy he has won five times so far, last occasion at the 2008 edition.
“I feel my game allows me to still play for many more years. I have almost played a thousand matches on tour and that takes its toll, but I’m very professional when it comes to massages, stretching, diet, sleep, all of that stuff. That’s why I’m confident I can still play for many more years,” he said.
