Both Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez scored two goals in FC Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Villarreal last night at the Camp Nou in the first day of La Liga. Thiago’s opener and Messi’s double also had a solid contribution in Catalans’ debut, who share the leading position with rivals Real Madrid.
Barca’s first chance came early in the fifth minute through Messi whose low shot allowed Lopez to hold the ball with ease in what should have been at least a more difficult test for the Villarreal keeper. Pedro was the second one to miss golden chance, but his header went just over the bar two minutes later. Fabregas got his first opportunity in the 25th minute. Messi beat his marks to feed the newly arrived in good position, only to be denied by Lopez who managed the situation to keep the sheet clean.
One minute later, Thiago Alcantara made it 1-0 following a personal exquisite, delivering a well placed shot into the far post through defender’s legs. The goal preceded three cautions as all Zapata, Mascherano and Fabregas were shown yellow cards for sins.
Villarreal’s first chance came late in the 40th minute through Rossi who lost the one-on-one action with Valdez who made a tremendous save. One minute before the half time, Fabregas doubled the lead after being perfectly served with a through ball by Messi to put it home past Lopez. That was Spaniard’s first league game and second in all competitions for the Catalans.
Three minutes into the second part, another newly arrived Alexis Sanchez made it 3-0. The Chilean was picked inside the box to beat the keeper with a superb shot below him. He then received a yellow card for taking off his shirt. As reply, coach Juan Carlos Garrido introduced Camunas for Borja Valero, but the Yellow Submarine would get from bad to worse.
Just three minutes after the substitution, Messi started to build his double with a lovely shot from close range. The Argentine beat the keeper to put it home into the empty net and kill the game after just one hour. Villarreal made their last changes in the 57th minute when Wakaso and Marcos Senna replaced Cani and Nilmar respectively. Barca also made a change, introducing Xabi for Andres Iniesta.
Pep Guardiola then also replaced Fabregas with Jonathan, the fifth goal becoming just a matter of time. the 74th minute saw Messi complete his double following a perfect cross from the right which found the Argentine unmarked in six yards, deflecting the ball in as a simply formality.
David Villa got his first chance in the 80th minute. The winger was released in good position only to strike it wide and leave the scoreboard unchanged. The end of the game brought the visitors a couple of more yellow cards as result of heavy frustration, with Wakasao and Claudio Marchena getting their names on the referee notebook.
Barca won and are second in the table with the same number of points as Real Madrid who lead the standings thanks to a 6-0 debut against Zaragoza. Villarreal are 19th in La Liga, sitting just above Real’s victims.
Said a disappointed Garrido after the game: “You know that when you play against Barca you have to be at your best and today we were not. They forced us into making mistakes. They put a lot of midfielders on the pitch and that cut off our passing… I have said it a million times, Barcelona is marking an age.”
Barcelona will next meet Real Sociedad away, while Villarreal host FC Sevilla next Sunday.
