Arsenal beat Olympiacos to go second
Ernesto Valverde’s side created the first big chance in the third minute when David Fuster was picked in good position only to strike it wide into the stands. Five minutes later, Oxlade Chamberlain, whop was making his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League broke through and opened the score with a superb finish following a personal number on the edge of the box.
Olympiacos edged the second goal in the 14th minute through Djebbour who shot the rebound into the side netting. The 20th minute saw the Gunners double the lead thanks to another lovely finish from Andre Santos who scored his first ever goal for Arsenal. Chamakh got his first chance three minutes later but the Moroccan failed to convert it home from good position.
Four minutes later the Greeks closed the gap to one goal after David Fuster took advantage of a poor marking to beat Szczesny with a great header. The visitors got a second chance one minute later when Djebbour was allowed to win some space in dangerous area from, where he struck it just over the bar.
Rosicky was the first player to pick a yellow for a foul on Kevin Mirallas. Arshavin then started a personal action the finish of which could not find anybody inside the box. Mirallas had his dangerous shot saved in the 39th minute in what could have been a leveler just before the half time which eventually went 2-1 to the hosts.
Four minutes into the second aprt, Holebas saw the first yellow for a trip on Chamberlain. Greeks’ goalkeeper Costanzo denied Chamberlain with a great effort to give his side one more chance to break. The same great shaped Chamberlain missed yet another big chance in the 55th minute following an efficient job on the left the finish of which was blocked at the death. Chamakh followed the rebound but the striker was also denied by a strong defense.
The away side edged their second goal in the 65th minute through Torosidis whose edge of the box shot went over the bar. Oxlade Chamberlain was replaced by Aaron Ramsey in the 68th minute to receive a warm ovation from the home fans. Ramsey made his presence felt just a couple of minutes later when the midfielder picked Arshavin in dangerous area from where the Russian struck it straight at the keeper.
Fuster was shown the first yellow card in the 70th minute for a trip on the same Russian who was putting more pressure as the game progressed. Chamakh made way for Robin van Persie with 20 minutes left in the game. Arteta was also shown a yellow card following a tough challenge on Djebbour. The Greeks then introduced Marko Pantelic for Fuster.
Arsene Wenger wasted his third substitution with seven minutes left as the French manager sent on Kleran Gibbs and called Arshavin on the bench. Djebbour conceded fifth yellow card in the 85th minute for an ugly intervention on newly introduced Arteta. The last minutes went scoreless for both sides as Arsenal were celebrating three precious points which keep their superior phase chances alive.
Said Gunners’ man of the match Chamberlain: “I am proud to score in the Champions League tonight for the team. I made a little contribution and I’m hoping I can push on from here and improve… I wasn’t too nervous though – at the end of the day football’s football and if you are confident in your own ability and work hard enough the talent should take over.”
Arsenal are second in the group F with four points, two behind leaders Olympique Marseille who crashed German champions Borussia Dortmund 3-0 last night at the Velodrome. As fro Olympiacos, they lie foot of the table with zero points, having the Germans one point atop of them. Wenger’s side will next visit Marseille on October 19, while the Greeks welcome Borussia on Karaiskaki stadium the same day.
