Bayern beat City to cement leading position
Leaving Carlos Tevez on the bench, City’s Italian manager Roberto Mancini declared at the end of the game that the Argentine ‘is finished with me’ after the Argentine refused to enter the pitch. Tevez seemed to have been upset with his substitute status, something which led to a fight between him and the coach. Striker’s days at the Eastlands are now numbered, according to Mancini who is willing not to use the 27 year old too often.
Dzeko was the first to put pressure on Neuer’s goal as the Bosnian was denied by Munich keeper in the fifth minute following a great play from City the finish of which did not bring a change on the scoreboard, though. Munich’s first big chance came in the 14th minute when Franck Ribery was gifted a ball in good position only to finish it poorly.
City broke back a couple of minutes later through Dzeko who struck an easy ball standswards, following a superb action on the left. Manchester then won a free kick on the left which Yaya Toure hit over the wall but straight at Neuer. Ribery mocked yet another great chance in the 30th minute following a poor control from Nasri who led to a dangerous action directed by the Germans who were very close from scoring the first one.
The French then tried to pick free Muller but a vigilant Cluichy cleared the air to keep the sheet clean. Three minutes later Bayern failed to convert an easy action which saw them attack with five players against three. Schweinsteiger tried to finish the action but his shot went into the stands. The 38th minute brought the hosts the first goal. Ribery slalomed between two marks on the left only to be denied by the keeper whose poor save allowed Gomez to put home the follow up form four yards.
Sergio Aguero, who failed to shine bright, conceded the first yellow with two minutes left in the first half, for a tough challenge on Schweinsteiger. Kompany then blocked Ribery in what could have been a second one for the Germans. Gomez made it 2-0 with one minute remaining in the added time, beating Hart after a poor save from the keeper who saved the ball as far as the German who scored a similar goal from close range.
The half time went 2-0 as City were still out of ideas. Dzeko replaced De Jong in the 56th minute, while Rafinha tried his luck with a 25 yarder five minutes later which City’s defence blocked. Sergio Aguero neared the first goal in the 67th minute but a late tackle from Boateng saved the Germans from a potential disaster.
Gael Clichy was the second City player to see a yellow card as the French was cautioned for a foul on Muller in the 68th minute. Samir Nasri strengthened the middle in the 70th minute when Mancini introduced the former Arsenal player for James Milner. Barry also made way for Aleksandar Kolarov in the 74th minute but City provided the same play.
Toure borthers Yaya and Kolo were both booked in the 76th and 77th minute respectively for challenges on the same Ribery. Gomez was very close to completing the hat trick in the 82nd minute but the German was denied by Hart at the death. Heyneckes made the step back as he introduced Tymoshuck for Kroos with seven minutes left in the game.
Bayern then made a couple of late changes, introducing Arjen Robben and Nils Petersen for Franck Ribery and Gomez respectively. Munich lead the group A with six points won in two games, being followed by Napoli who has earned four points so far, and City who have only won one point. Villarreal lie foot of the able with zero points as the Spanairds were defeted last night 0-2 by Napoli in Italy.
Said a disappointed Mancini after the loss: “Tonight we had a problem in this game. Before, we haven’t had a problem. Maybe at the moment Bayern are too strong for us, but we have a chance to go through, we still have four games to go and all is not lost. Maybe we can win the second game when they come to Manchester.”
Bayern will next travel to Napoli on October 18, while Manchester City welcome Villarreal the same day at the Etihad Stadium.
