Cubs Overcome Early Gap To Top Brewers
Cubs battle back to beat Brewers
Chicago Cubs stunned leaders Milwaukee Brewers 7-1 on Wednesday at the Wrigley Field after surviving an early scare.
The game started with a two inning drought in what seemed to be a tight meeting in Chicago. Brewers were the first to take the minimal advantage through Betancourt who scored the first point after Hart grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop, but also thanks to a throwing error committed by shortstop Castro.
Unfortunately for the visitors, that remained their only momentum as Cubs powered through to a seven point run which gave them the clear win in the end. Castro singled to left as La Hair evened the situation in the same third round. The fourth term went scoreless for both sides, while the fifth one saw the same hosts take the first lead through Soriano and Castro who came up with a double following Le Mahieu’s double.
Things got much worse for the favorites when Cubs scored a triple in the next round. Byrd hit a 404 foot homerun which also involved both Baker and Soto who made it 6-1 with three terms left. Finally, Le Mahieu brought his side the last point in the seventh one, following Soto’s double.
Said Wolf after the game: “Definitely we want to get it over with. I think the one thing that was a possibility that we really didn’t want was to clinch on our off day (Thursday). That would have been anticlimactic… It will be great to do it at home so we can spray some of the fans with champagne, that’s something they’ve been dying for.”
Cubs are fourth in the Central with a .442 record which includes 69 wins and 87 losses, the victory over Brewers being their fifth in the past ten games and 39th at the Wrigley Field. As for Brewers, they are top spot with a .583 impressive percentage featuring 98 wins and 57 losses. The defeat to Cubs was their fourth in the past ten games and 42nd on the road.
Colorado Rockies 0 – 4 San Diego Padres
San Diego blanked Colorado yesterday at the Coors Field where the visitors managed to keep the sheet clean throughout the entire meeting but also where the same away side scored all their points within the opening term.
Maybin brought the first lead after Headley hit a sacrifice fly to left. Gonzalez then hit another sacrifice fly to left allowing Hermida to double the lead with Denorfia getting to third. Even more than that, Padres extended the lead to three points when Denorfia scored his first one, following Rizzo’s single.
Finally, Martinez scored the last one right afterwards, following Parrino’s singling to give Padres an early clear win, their 36th on the road this season. Despite the win, San Diego remain foot of the table in the West with a .436 negative record which incorporates 68 wins and 88 defeats.

Phillips was the first to score a point in Cincinnati after Heisey singled to center, while Cairo doubled the advantage in the second term after hitting a 400 foot homerun, the only one of the meeting. The rest of the terms went scoreless as Cincinnati were celebrating their second straight early win.

New York Yankees 4 – 2 Tampa Bay Rays
Yankees won the second meeting with Rays in the same manner they had won the first one. New York started the game on Yankee stadium with a two point lead set in the second and fourth terms. First, Cano hit a 378 foot homerun and then Granderson doubled it with Cano out at second and Teixeira to third, play which followed Montero’s grounding into double play.
Rays’ first reply came in the fifth term through Shoppach who fried a 410 foot homerun to cut the deficit to one point, but things got even worse for the leaders when Rodriguez came up with a second one in the seventh term, making it 2-2.
The eighth term saw Yankees go two points atop as Posada singled to center, allowing both Golson and Teixeira to score a precious double with Cano getting to second, which brought them the late win as well as the AL East title.
