Schengen Zone

"LandepNews"
Romania and Bulgaria Denied Access To The Schengen Zone
Schengen Zone
Romania and Bulgaria have been denied entering in the Schengen zone on Thursday, as the EU ministers were unable to reach the unanimity of votes and decided not to hold a vote. The countries that opposed the admission were the Netherlands and Finland.
The Polish interior minister, Jerzy Miller, said that a promise has been broken and that the two countries had met the requirements that would make sure that they can protect the border of the European Union.
Miller, whose country is the holder of the rotating presidency of the European Union, said that by the decision made today, the European Union member states have proved that there is distrust among them, and that they cannot cooperate fully.
The Bulgarian interior minister said that the refusal to admit new countries to the Schengen zone is placing the European project in jeopardy.
The Netherlands and Finland said that the decision to delay the admission of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen zone is motivated by the fact that the two countries have to do more in fighting organized crime and corruption.
The requirement is aimed at making sure that no criminal activity or illegal goods are being brought on the territory of the European Union from the countries outside the union.
Schengen flee-travel zone means that the citizens of the member countries can travel within the European Union without the control of their papers from one country to the other, as the borders between the countries that are in the zone are erased.
The French and German officials had proposed a compromise that implied to drop border checks at airports and seaports in October while continuing them at the land crossings until the summer of 2013, but even this proposal was rejected.
Schengen zone is one of the most important achievements in the European Union along with the continental currency euro, both under a lot of stress nowadays.
