Dalai Lama
China warned on Monday the Tibetan Dalai Lama that he has no right to decide whether he wants to be reincarnated or not. The warning comes a few days after Dalai Lama announced that by the time he reached 90 he would decide whether he should be reincarnated or the next Dalai Lama would be recognized in other way.
He explained his decision based on a Buddhist teaching according to which each person has a right to decide on where and when they should reincarnate. Based on that, Dalai Lama said that if he decided to reincarnate, he would leave very strict guidelines on the where and when, so that the ones empowered to search for him would recognize him.
If he decides not to reincarnate, Dalai Lama added, than he will leave instructions about the way to recognize the new Dalai Lama, which, in his opinion, may be elected like the pope in Rome or like the politicians.
The Tibetan spiritual leader said that the instructions will be handed down as long as he still is in his mental and physical capacities, after he decides whether it is necessary to do it.
As surreal as it sounds given that it is about a fact that transcends life as we know it, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said that any attempt of the Dalai Lama to reincarnate the Tibetan traditional way goes against the Chinese law, and will be thwarted.
The spokesman reminded that only Beijing can approve Dalai Lama successor. The regime has already appointed a friendly Panchen Lama, the second after the Dalai Lama in the power structure of the theocratic state, while the Panchen appointed by Dalai Lama has been detained without being heard from since 1995.
Chinese authorities said that though they respect religious freedom and even the Tibetan succession right, the new Dalai Lama must meet the approval of the Communist regime. Otherwise, he is illegal.
On Saturday, Dalai Lama conferred with the leaders of the four Tibetan Buddhist schools about the future of the traditional succession of the spiritual leader of the people. Among the topics introduced by the 14th Dalai Lama there was even the one concerning the utility of the office altogether. Dalai Lama wanted to know whether it served any purpose to continue this tradition that has been going on since the 17th century or the people should elect their leaders by vote, as other nations do, which would probably be the end of the theocracy in Tibet.
Dalai Lama said that ultimately the decision is to be made by the Tibetan lamas, the Tibetan people and all those who are following the Buddhist teachings.
