Yankees beat Red Sox in Game 1
Yankees’ strong start brought them a couple of points only in the opening inning. Jeter stole second as Gardner scored the first point on Saltalamacchia’s missed catch. Finally, Jeter hit a ground rule double to right, allowing Laird to close the victory very earl, in the sixth term.
New York have improved their season record to .610, including 97 wins and 62 defeats. The victory over their main followers Boston has been their seventh in the past ten games and 52nd at home. On the other side, Red Sox are second with a .560 percentage which features 89 wins and 70 defeats.
Concerning the second meeting between the two, it was won by Red Sox who got a hard fought revenge over the leaders whom they defeated 7-4 after a 14-inning clash. The two sides went head to head until the seventh minute. From then on seven other innings went scoreless for the two sides, providing by far the tightest confrontation of the day.

Crawford put his side one point behind in the next inning after Gonzalez grounded out to first. Athletics edged Angels yesterday at the Angel stadium of Anaheim where the hosts were overcome a three point lead. Despite a pretty strong start, the hosts lost the control of the game in the last inning which saw the visitors score four points in succession.
Kendrick was the first to score on the Anaheim, following Abreu’s singling. LA found it very hard to build the win so they needed to wait three more innings for a third point. Wells hit a 416 foot homerun in the sixth term, but even so, the hosts still needed more points to secure the win.
The seventh round also went scoreless for the two teams as LA seemed to be leading towards the victory. But Oakland still had something to say as the visitors cut the deficit to one point with two rounds left in the game. Sizemore broke the ice for his side after Weeks singled to center, while Miller made it 2-3 after Crisp hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Angels made it 5-2 through Hunter and Callaspo but still the game was far form being over. Willingham fired a 393 foot homerun early in the ninth term, while Sizemore put his side one point behind the hosts also thanks to a throwing error committed by pitcher Walden.
Things got much more complicated for Los Angeles when Carter evened the situation when nobody expected. He thus gave his side the only chance to score the winner, as well. Which they did. Crisp hit a sacrifice fly to center and Rosales brought an emotional win for the away side.
Said a disappointed Torii Hunter, LA’s fielder: “We got insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and just couldn’t close it out. There were some mistakes there, and they capitalized on them. When you’ve got a chance to get that wild card, you just can’t make mistakes. So this game really hurts, trust me. But at the same time, we’ve still got life left and we’re still breathing.”
Oakland are third in the West with a .453 record including 72 wins and 87 defeats, the victory over Angeles being their fifth in the past ten games and 29th on the road. Los Angeles, by contrast, are second with a .541 percentage which features 86 wins and 73 defeats. The loss to Athletics has been their sixth in the past ten games and 33rd at home.
Tampa Bay Rays 5 – 2 Toronto Blue Jays
Rays have started to build streak when they defeated Jays yesterday at the Tropicana Field. Upton opened the meeting with a 405 foot homerun and an early lead for the hosts, while Zobrist imitated him right afterwards, making it 2-0. Jays’ first reply came in the second term through Johnson who cut the deficit to one point after Cooper doubled to center.
Tampa Bay broke back in the third one when Longoria, who also fired a 447 foot homerun, and Shoppach brought a double for their side which they propelled three points atop of their opponents. Wise tried to resuscitate his side in the fifth inning when he hit a 370 foot homerun, but that was the last point for Toronto who would concede one more point in the next round.
Shoppach thus closed the win in the sixth term with a 356 foot homerun which brought Rays the second straight win. Tampa Bay remain third in the East with a .553 record which includes 88 wins and 71 defeats. The win over Jays was also their fifth in the past ten games and 44th at home.
On the other side, Toronto lie second from the bottom with a .503 still positive record featuring 80 wins and 79 defeats. The loss to Rays was their second in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 40th on the road.
New York Mets 4 – 9 Philadelphia Phillies
Phillies have picked their 99th win of the season after defeating Mets yesterday at the Citi Field where the visitors scored all their points in succession and within the first half. Pence hit a 395 foot homerun early in the opening term, while Rollins doubled the lead as just. Howard made it even three after Ibanez hit a sacrifice fly to right.
The second round brought the leaders one more point from Ruiz who scored after Utley singled to left. Furthermore, Polanco doubled to left in the third inning, allowing Ibanez to extend the lead to five points and draw a clear win for Phillies.

Evans scored the last point in the eighth one after Turner doubled to center as Mets left beaten.
Philadelphia are top spot in the East with a .623 record which includes 99 wins and 60 losses, the victory over New York being their second in the past ten games and 47th on the road. On the other side, Mets lie second from the bottom with a .478 percentage which features 76 wins and 83 defeats, the loss to Phillies being their fifth in the past ten games and 45th at home.
Pittsburgh Pirates 4 – 5 Cincinnati Reds
Reds edged Pirates yesterday at the PNC Park after managing to keep the lead throughout the entire meeting. Phillips brought the first advantage for Reds in the opening round after Bruce singled to right. The second term saw the same visitors score a couple of more points and suggest an easy game for in Pittsburgh.
Janish hit a sacrifice fly to left, permitting Francisco to make it 2-0 with Mesoraco getting to third. Phillips then singled to center as Mesoraco made it three right afterwards. Pirates came up with their first reply in the same round when D’Arnaud tripled to center and Lee and Ludwick made it 2-3. D’Arnaud evened the situation following McKenry’s sacrifice fly as things seemed to get complicated for the away side.
Fortunately, Mesoraco and Janish hit a double for the Reds in the sixth term, making it 5-3 with three terms to be played. The next two innings went scoreless for both sides, while the ninth one saw Pittsburgh cut the deficit to one point through McCuthen in what was their last momentum.
Cincinnati won and picked their 35th away success. Reds are third in the Central with a .484 record which includes 77 wins and 82 defeats. As for Pirates, they are just behind them with a .447 percentage including 71 wins and 88 losses. The defeat to Reds was their sixth in the past ten games and 45th at home.
