Tigers have extended their winning streak to ten successes after demolishing Chicago White Sox 14-4 on Monday night at the US Cellular Field.
Chicago were given the first lead in the opening term through Pierre who scored the first point after Viciedo grounded out to third but that was the best the hosts could do in front of the leaders. Tigers got the first lead in the second term thanks to Peralta, who fired a 381 foot homerun, and Martinez who brought his side a quick advantage.
Raburn then fired a 358 foot homerun, putting Detroit two points atop of their opponents who would never capture a lead. Chicago struggled to battle back but they could only cut deficits. Beckham grounded out to shortstop in the same second inning as De Aza closed the gap to one point.
From then on things went from bad to worse for the White Sox as Tigers would score 11 points in a row. At first, Avila grounded out to second for Young’s 4-2 lead and then Peralta singled to center for Cabrera’s fifth point.
The fourth inning brought Detroit one more point through Jackson who made it 5-2 after Young singled to right. The fifth one saw the same favorites go six points adrift and draw a big win at the Cellular Field. Raburn doubled to center and Avila made it 7-2 with Raburn getting to third on De Aza’s error.
The same Raburn made it eight on a wild pitch by Danks. Detroit finished their rally in the sixth inning which brought them six more points. Cabrera singled to left for Santiago’s first point, while Martinez singled to right for Young’s 10-2 lead.
Cabrera and Martinez propelled their side ten points ahead of the sleeping Chicago who could only witness their own ruining. Finally, Santiago doubled to right allowing Raburn and Inge score the last double for the visitors with Jackson getting to third.
On the other side, White Sox were given two more consolation points through Morel who hit a couple of homers in the seventh and ninth term respectively.
Said a delighted Detroit manager Jim Leyland: “We got that cushion and he got some balls on the ground and did a good job. I think that relaxed him a little bit when we got the lead and he pitched very well, but he’s got to continue working to get the breaking stuff better and the changeup — more strikes.”
Detroit are top spot in the Central with a .578 record featuring 85 wins and 62 defeats. The victory over White Sox was their tenth in a row and 40th on the road. As for Chicago, they are second, 11.5 behind Tigers, with a .500 record which includes 73 wins and 73 defeats. Yesterday’s defeat was their second in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 40th at home.
