The visit of the Turkish PM comes at a time when Turkey has the worst ties with its former ally in the region, Israel, after the Palmer report was released by the UN stressing out that the Israeli blockade on Gaza was legitimate, and that even though they acted with brutality, the Israeli soldiers were motivated to defend themselves in response to the violent reception the Turks on board the Mavi Marmara gave them.
Turkey reacted immediately to the conclusions of the Palmer report by expelling the Israeli ambassador and members of the embassy staff, and by announcing that military and economic measures would be also taken.
Erdogan announced that Turkey would patrol more often the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean and that the vessels of the Turkish navy would escort the humanitarian aid vessel that are heading toward Gaza, so that what happened to Mavi Marmara may never occur again.
PM’s office made clarifications to this initiative, by saying that the Turkish navy will not escort every ship that goes to Gaza, but that it will intervene as ships are being aggressed by Israel.
On Monday, Turkish government even announced that their navy received orders to deploy three ships in Eastern Mediterranean and intercept Israeli ships in the international waters and diffuse their weapon systems.
The order was that if one Turkish ship came within 100 meters of an Israeli ship in the international waters, it would neutralize its weapons systems.
In another development, Turkey announced that it would support the families of the citizens that lost their lives in May 2010 as they intend to go to the international courts to prosecute the soldiers that killed the nine Turks.
Erdogan is projecting in the Middle East an image of a Turkey that is taking up Arab world’s arch-foe, that is ready to protect and guide the countries that recently came out of the totalitarian regime.
In keeping with the “new-Ottoman” doctrine laid down by the foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu, the key words Turkey is using in dealing with the Middle East new partners are “grandeur” and “might.”
In an interview for Al Jazeera, Erdogan said that the incident in 2010 was cause for war and could have unleashed war, but Turkey showed grandeur in exercising patience for the sake of the region.
He is expected to give a speech at the University in Cairo, where he will talk more of Turkish grandeur and will expose Turkey’s vision of the region’s future.
Since the conflict with Israel Turkey has won a lot of respect in the Arab world, and Erdogan is seen like a regional leaders. That is why he was received by enthusiastic crowds in Cairo.
However, it is expected that the military council in Egypt will tone him down a little as to the anti-Israeli rhetoric as they attempt to keep control over the anti-Semitic feeling in their country following the shooting by IDF of some Egyptian frontier police officers two weeks ago, an incident that placed Israel in the position of offering another apology, which it averted by presenting proves according to which Israeli military was not to blame for the incident.
The Turkish Prime Minister is also expected to address Tuesday afternoon the foreign ministers of the countries that belong to the Arab League.
