Messi hits three as Barca crash Atletico
David Villa opened the score early in the game, while Mirando deflected a tricky finish into the own goal minutes later. Messi scored his first goal amid the first term and completed his hat-trick with ten minutes left in the second half. Atletico were the first to near the opener as Reyes picked Tiago in good position only to hit the bar in what could have been a an early screamer for the visitors.
The ninth minute saw Barca get their first goal through David Silva who was played with a long cross from the left. The striker beat his mark and finished it below keeper Thibaut Courtois into the left hand post from ten yards. Pedro got his first big chance in the 13th minute. Xabi highlighted the forwarder with yet another perfect cross which Pedro struck it just wide.
A couple of minutes later Messi’s action finished with a poor defending from Miranda who deflected the ball into the own net. Messi scored the first goal in the 26th minute after a personal exquisite which saw the Ballon d’Or beat two marks at the same time and strike it past the keeper and into the near post. With five minutes left in the first half Perea saved his side from a big disaster, blocking Thiago’s action at the death.
The half time went 3-0 as Barca were already heading towards a clear win. Coach Gregorio Manzano made the first change two seconds in the second half, introducing Mario Suarez for Arda Turan. The visitors missed a big chance early in the term in what was their second dangerous action of the game. Messi mocked a golden opportunity in the 54th minute when the Argentine was blocked by the keeper after being perfectly served by Fabregas.
Pep Guardiola made his first substitution in the 56th minute, replacing Busquets with Gerard Pique. Perea also denied Messi with a crucial tackle in the 67th minute as Barca were chasing as many goals as possible. Pique picked his first yellow card in the 70th minute for a foul on Falcao. Diego took the responsibility for the free kick only to be dismissed by a vigilant Valdez.
Seydoue Keita replaced Cesc Fabregas in the 73rd minute as Barcelona were preparing for a dangerous free kick. Messi beat the wall and missed the target, though the double had become just a matter of time for the forward. Five minutes later he scored his second one following a long distance run the finish of which saw him beat three marks as well as the keeper into the left hand far post.
Guardiola introduced Maxwell for Abidal as the last substitution, but Barca still had ten minutes to score one more time. Valdez made a tremendous save in the 85th minute when Adrian beat his marks only to be denied by the keeper whose poor save allowed Gabi to win the ball. The rebound was mocked wide by the midfielder as Atletico were preparing for a goalless defeat.
Xabi also missed a big opportunity one minute later following a superb action from Dani Alves whose cross was volleyed wide over the bar by the playmaker. Finally, Messi completed his double in the last minute following a trade mark Barca action which saw both him and Villa develop a one two play the finish of which was converted home through the keeper’s legs.
Said coach Pep Guardiola after the game: “We are not unbeatable…….any team can beat us, but if we do things right the fans who come to watch us will have a good time, which is the most important thing. We played very well, it was a lesson in concentration, but from tomorrow on we have to do it again.”
Barca won but stay second in the standings with 11 points, the same as their main followers FC Sevilla and one behind leaders Real Betis. On the other side, Atletico Madrid are eighth with seven points, the same as Real Sociedad. The Catalans will next meet Sporting Gijon away next Sunday, while Atletico welcome FC Sevilla the same day.
