Vettel, quickest in second practice
The Briton set the best time per lap in the first training session, stopping the clock at one minute and 48,599 seconds. Hamilton spent only ten laps on the track providing by far the best time on Friday, given Vettel’s 0,406 second gap. Red Bull shined pretty bright within the first session as Mark Webber came third, one second behind his team mate.
Ferrari made a poor start as Fernando Alonso came fourth with a two second gap, while Felipe Massa came sixth with a 3,444 second gap. Jenson Button came nearly one second faster than the Brazilian as McLaren might face some difficulty if they don’t improve their time.
Force India had Adrian Sutil on seventh position, while former world champion Michael Schumacher, who was very close to clinching a podium spot in Monza, set the eighth best time, being 3,817 seconds slower than the leader Hamilton.
Paulo di Resta came ninth just under four seconds, while Nico Rosbeerg was the first to overcome the four second gap. Renault failed to impress as Senna came 16th, 5,166 seconds slower than the Birton, while Vitaly Petrov set a 6,137 second gap.
Concerning the second free practice, Sebastian Vettel set a one minute and 46,374 second best time, being followed by Alonso who came just .201 seconds behind him. The first practice winner Hamilton came on third position with a 0,741 second gap. Felipe Massa also improved his pace, coming 0,746 seconds behind the German, while mark Webber, who is still chasing his first season title, dropped fifth a 0,891 second gap.
Michael Schumacher was in better shape as the German veteran came sixth, but 2,044 seconds behind Vettel. Adrian Sutil grabbed the same seventh position he had clinched in the first practice, coming 2,492 seconds slower than the leader.
One of the biggest surprises came from Sauber whose Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi picked abck to back positions. Another surprise, this time a bad one, saw Jenson Button came tenth, nearly three seconds and a half slower than Vettel.
Vitaly Petrov came 14th with a 4,025 second gap, while Nico Rosberg from Mercedes came just behind the Russian.
Fernando Alonso declared in Singapore that Ferrari must have a strong start next year if wanted to gain back the leading position. “We need to focus on next year, we need to be competitive from the first race of 2012.”
The Italians have thus switched their focus on the next season, given the fact that Red Bull are very close to retaining the title this season. “Unfortunately this year is nearly gone, the championship will be in Red Bull hands,” said the Spaniard. “This year has been too easy for him (Vettel) probably, because now six races before the end of the season he has the chance to win mathematically the championship, so I expect next year much more competition.”
Ferrari are third in the standings with 254 points, having McLaren above them with 325 points and the Austrians from Red Bull with 451. Alonso sits second in the driver table with 172 points, 112 behind leader Vettel, while his team mate Felipe Massa lies sixth with 82 points.
