Plane Crash Site
A Russian jet carrying a hockey team crashed into a river bank while taking off on Wednesday, causing 43 people to die and injuring critically two other people. The accident was one of the worst crashes that involved the death of sports team.
The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said that the plane, a Yak-42, crashed in sunny weather immediately after leaving Yaroslav, on the Volga River, 240 kilometers northeast of Moscow.
The plane was carrying the ice team Lokomotiv, from Yaroslav to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, where the team was expected to play against Dinamo Minsk at the opening game of Kontinental Hockey League.
The plane was carrying eight crew members, and 37 passengers. Only two of them have survived. One of them was player Alexander Galimov, and the other was a crew member.
Vladimir Putin dispatched the transport minister immediately to the site, 15 kilometers east of Yaroslav. The plane that crashed was built in 1993, and belonged to Yak Service Company.
Russian president announced that as of next year the Soviet-built planes will be taken out of service. The Yak-42 type has been in service since 1980, and 100 are still in service all over Russia.
In June 47 people lost their lives in a crash of a Tu-134 crashed near Petrozavodsk, killing 47.
Lokomotiv is the leading team in Russian hockey, and was the third in the KHL last year. There were some European players in the team, including Slovakian national team captain Pavol Demitra, who played in the National Hockey League in Canada.
Josef Vasicek and Karel Rachunek, from the Czech Republic, and Ruslan Salei and Karlis Skrastins from Russia play for Lokomotiv. It was not clear which of them was in the plane when it crashed.
The Russian Ice Hockey Federation assured that the hockey in Yaroslav will not perish after the terrible accident.
