Tampa Bay Rays finished their four game series against Yankees with an impressive 15-8 win grabbed yesterday at the Yankee stadium where the visitors scored their first 13 points within the first half and in succession.
Rays’ lively start brought them three points only in the first term. Joyce singled to right and inning scored the first point with Upton getting to third and Longoria to second. Upton also scored a point within the same play also thanks to an error committed by fielder Swisher. Damon then hit a sacrifice fly allowing Longoria to make it three.
Jennings made it even four in the second inning after Upton tripled to center, while Upton propelled his side five points adrift after Longoria doubled to right. Things got much worse for the hosts when Zobrist hit a 385 foot homerun and Damon completed the double as just. Rays came up with yet another double in the same fourth term as Damon hit a 380 foot homer and Longoria made it 11-0.
Zobrist scored the 12th one after Birgnac singled to center and Kotchman got to second, the victory becoming just a matter of time for the Rays who were simply rallying past the East champions. Upton ended the rally in the fifth term, after Zobrist hit a sacrifice fly to right. Yankees’ first reply came in the next inning through Jones and Pena who scored a double for the hosts, including a 410 footer hit by the first one.
Nunez cut the deficit to ten points in the seventh round following Pena’s singling, while Romine scored the fourth points for New York right afterwards, following Jones’ singling. Finally, Pena and Jones brought a double to make it 6-13 but that could only trigger Rays’ two point run.
Johnson scored his first point in the eighth term, while Guyer made it 15-6 after Canzler hit a sacrifice fly to center, having Rodriguez to third. The last word belonged to New York, though, who closed the meeting with a double scored by Dickerson and Nunez who made the loss more bearable.
Said Maddon after the game: “Obviously it wasn’t all their lineup but there was a lot of good hitters in that lineup and he attacked them. His composure, Yankee Stadium, throwing strikes, all those things speak to the makeup of Matt Moore.”
Tampa Bay are third in the East with a .551 record which includes 86 wins and 70 defeats, the victory over the leaders being their fourth in the past ten games and 44th on the road. On the other side, Yankees remain top spot with a .609 record featuring 95 wins and 61 losses. The defeat to Rays was their fourth in the past ten games and 28th at home.
Detroit Tigers 5 – 6 Baltimore Orioles
Orioles have extended their winning streak to three successes when they edged Detroit yesterday at the Comerica Park. Baltimore scored their first five points in succession as Detroit could only cut deficits from then on. Hardy brought the first advantage in the opening term after Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly to center.
The second round went scoreless for both sides, while the third one saw the same Hardy double the lead with a 389 foot homerun. Jones also fired a 416 foot homerun with Wieters completing a double for the visitors.
Reynolds scored the last point of the early rally in the same fourth inning after Reimold hit a sacrifice fly to center. Tigers’ first reply came right afterwards through Young who closed the gap to four points after Martinez grounded into double play. Inge resuscitated his side with a second point scored in the fifth inning, following Ordonez’s sinling.
Orioles even suffered a shock when they were held at five following a triple developed by Young, who fired a 409 foot homerun, Santos and Ordonez, in what was the turning point of the game. Fortunately for the away side, Baltimore were given yet another lead in the sixth inning when Reimold reached on infield single to third, allowing Jones to close the meeting with three rounds left to be plated.
Despite the win, Orioles lie foot of the table in the East with a .423 record including 66 wins and 90 defeats. The victory over Detroit was their third in a row, eighth in the past ten games and 29th on the road. Tigers are top spot in the Central with a .577 record featuring 90 wins and 66 defeats, the loss to Baltimore being their fourth in the past ten games.
Dodgers have switched positive when they defeated San Francisco Giants yesterday at the Dodger stadium where the hosts overcame an early deficit to develop a six point consistent run which would bring the comprehensive victory.
Beltran started the game with a 404 foot homerun, but Giants’ lead did not last too long as Dodgers evened the situation immediately through Rivera, who hit a 430 foot homerun, and Kempt to made it 2-1. Moreover, Gordon scored a third one for LA in the third term following Rivera’s singling, while Barajas improved the lead to three points after Gordon singled to right.
Kemp made it 5-1 in the fifth round, while Miles scored the sixth one right afterwards. Giants closed the gap to four points in the seventh inning through Sandoval who fired a meaningless homer. Dodgers closed the game with a double provided by Kemp, who also hit a 411 foot homerun, and Gordon who brought his side a clear win in California.
Dodgers are third in the West with a .503 record which incorporates 78 wins and 77 defeats, the victory over San Francisco being their sixth in the past ten games and 42nd at home. As for Giants, they have gone .538 so far this season, percentage which includes 84 wins and 72 defeats. The loss to LA was their second in the past ten games and 38th on the road.
Cleveland Indians 11 – 2 Chicago White Sox
Indians crashed White Sox yesterday at the Progressive Field where they allowed their opponents to score just a couple of points amid the meeting. Cleveland had a strong start, managing to take a two point lead in the opening round through Fukudome and Kipnis who hit a couple of homers, one apiece.
The next three innings went scoreless for both sides, while the fifth one saw Chicago level the situation through De Aza, who made it 1-2 after Pierre singled to center, and Morel who threatened with a comeback. Pierre then got to second on throwing error committed by Cabrera.
Indians resumed their run and went two points atop in the fifth term through Hannahan and Carrera who brought a double following Fukudome’s singling. The sixth round saw the same Cleveland extend the lead to three points thanks to Hafner’s point. The hosts came up even with a triple point in the next term provided by Cabrera, who hit a 398 foot homerun, Carrera and Fukudome.
Phelps made it 9-2 after Sizemore singled to right, drawing a clear win for Indians for whom the success was becoming just a matter of two rounds. Finally, Cabrera singled to center, permitting both Hannahan and Carrera to make it 11-2 and close the meeting in high style.
Indians remain second in the Central with a .497 record which includes 77 wins and 78 defeat, the victory over White Sox being their fifth in the past ten games and 41st at home. As for Chicago, they are 1.5 behind them with a .487 percentage featuring 76 wins and 80 losses. The defeat to Cleveland was their seventh in the past ten games and 38th on the road.
