He used the opportunity to disregard the American efforts at thawing relations between Turkey and Israel and lashed out at the Jewish state, with a very important focus on the relation between Israel and the Palestinians, a few hours before Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas is expected to deliver a speech in which he will require full membership of the UN for the country he represents.
Erdogan described the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a “bleeding wound,” adding that the international community could no longer accept this situation. He accused Israel of stalling all attempts to solve the problem.
In a violent burst against its former ally, Erdogan said that from nuclear weapons to occupied territories Israel has broken all the international regulations.
“If you want to send a box of tomatoes to Palestine,” the Turkish PM said, using the name of the state Palestinians are seeking, “this must have the approval of Israel.” This is not humanitarian, he added.
Erdogan continued his accusations without receiving any immediate response from Israel. Turkey is expected to become one of the most determined supporters of Palestinians after the relations with Israel went down because of the Palmer report related to the incident in 2010, when a Turkish vessel was boarded by the IDF and nine Turkish nationals were killed on that occasion.
Turkey demanded a formal apology, which Israel refused to offer, considering that doing so would be admitting a guilt. The Palmer report says that the Israeli blockade on Gaza is legal and that the IDF troops were entitled to board the vessel and defend themselves as they were attacked by the Turks, criticizing however the disproportionate use of force by the Israeli soldiers.
This triggered a very strong diplomatic response from Turkey, which downgraded the diplomatic relations with Israel and began a tour in the Middle East to convince the Arab nations to join against Israel.
Turkey embraced the Palestinian cause, thus winning a lot of support from the people living in Egypt, Tunisia, or Libya, who have just toppled dictatorial regimes.
