The ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the first reference to the accusation of plotting to assassinate the Saudi Arabian envoy to Washington, a case that prompted the United States to take the case to the UN Security Council to demand that Iran be submitted to further sanctions.
Addressing the matter on Saturday, Khamenei said that the accusations were “meaningless and absurd,” and added that the United States wanted to isolate Iran by their action.
He spoke in front of thousands in the western city of Gilangharb, while the people of the city were chanting “down with America!” Khamenei also said that the information according to which a high-level US diplomat had met with an Iranian counterpart over the plot was not true.
The press secretary for the Iranian Mission to the UN said that there was no contact or negotiation between the two countries. The United States had said that it was in “direct contact” with Iran over the situation.
Some US State Department officials said that the US ambassador to the UN Susan Rice met with Mohammad Khazai, the Iranian permanent representative to the UN.
The scandal broke out as the United States announced that an Iranian naturalized in the UN had plotted with a Quds Force member to assassinate the Saudi envoy to the United States.
The Iranian was intercepted by the American enforcement agencies and is supposed to have had some connections with high ranked officers in Tehran, though it is considered that the president of Iran or the ayatollah may have been ignorant of the plan.
The plan was thwarted by the FBI and the Iranian man was arrested and decided to cooperate with the American prosecutors. The carelessness of the plot shows that wither the plotters thought they would not get caught or that if they get caught, they will not be disturbed by the Americans.
This situation seems to deepen the already existing scandal between the Saudi Arabia and Iran. The experts consider that there is a possibility that the relations between the two countries be downgraded.
