Breivik To Be Released From Solitary Confinement
Anders Behring Breivik
Anders Behring Breivik, the famous Norwegian man who confessed to killing 77 people in Norway in July was allowed on Thursday to come out of solitary confinement, but will still be subjected to heavy restrictions. The police said that they would not prolong the solitary confinement beyond October 17, considering that he was arrested on July 22 and has been kept ever since in solitary for fear that he may attempt otherwise to contact some of his accomplices and have them destroy evidence.
As he was kept in this form of imprisonment some consider a form of “sadistic torture,” police had enough time to gather their evidence and become more and more confident that the man had acted alone.
They said they had no evidence that he had had any accomplices, even though the possibility was not ruled out completely by the police.
Since they arrested him, police had to request the judge every four weeks that the solitary be prolonged. They decided not to renew the request. It is rare in Norway that solitary confinement is prolonged for 12 weeks as he will have next week.
Police also said that the end of solitary confinement is only a technicality, since he will still be kept in complete isolation and under a very strict surveillance. He will not be allowed to receive mail or visitors and will have no access to media.
Norwegian media reports that a number of prisoners and members of criminal underworld have promised to kill Brievik, which may explain why he is to be kept away from the regular inmates.
The only people he would come in contact with are the guards, the chaplain, and his lawyer. The lawyer said on Thursday he would address the ward to obtain a softening of conditions for his client.
A judge will have to determine on November 14 whether Breivik is to remain in custody any further. He is expected to remain in custody until the first half of next year, when his trial is scheduled.
Breivik is considered a “Templar Knight,” that is a far right organization bent on launching a “crusade” against the Muslim immigration in Europe.
Brievik motivated his killing spree as part of this campaign, and the fact that Labor party and the prime minister of the country were targeted by this crimes was caused by the stance on immigration of this party.
After he was arrested the lawyer attempted to create a case of insanity for his client, but the psychiatric evaluation he went through proved that he had a very good coordination, provided that he executed two rounds of killings in no more than a few hours.
For that reason he was declared perfectly accountable for what he had done, though he requested that the doctors be brought from Japan, motivating that they would have a sense of honor that is missing among the Europeans.
As he was trying to convince the investigators that he had accomplices and that he would be willing to tell police who they were, he handed them down a list of requests. Among the requests he made was for the king of Norway to step down and allow him to become the head of the army so that he may lead the crusade against the Muslims.
Some believed that such an insane request was part of the elaborate trick to convince the police and the judges that he was actually insane.
The killing during the summer shocked Norway and was considered by some people as the “Norwegian 9/11,” at least in as far as the security measures are concerned.
Norway, a very prosperous country in the northern Europe, was accustomed to very relaxed security measures, considering that the security levels in the country were very high. This would explain how Breivik was able to pull of his crimes so easily.
