Vienna: Smooth Start For Baghdatis
Baghdatis reaches second term in Vienna
Marcos Baghdatis has made an easy progress at the Austrian event after ousting United States’ Ryan Sweeting in two sets 6-4, 6-2 to face Kevin Anderson in the second term.
The Cypriot, who has not won a title so far this season, took the first lead after breaking his opponent twice in the opener. Baghdatis improved his pace as the game progress, so the second term was controlled by the same former top ten player who managed to steal two more services from the American who was given no chance to break in the last round.
It took the Cypriot one hour and ten minutes to secure a place into the second term as he has also improved his head to head series record against the world number 73 3-0. Marcos picked his previous win this year at the Winston Salem event in United States.
“It felt great. I’m really happy the way I fought today. Ryan was playing pretty good and I fought good and found a way to win, which is the most important thing, and I’m very happy about that. What I have to do is just go out there and continue the way I’m playing,” stated Baghdatis after the win.
Marcos finished the game with a 53 first serve percentage, ten aces, two double faults and a 67 service percentage. He also converted four out of six break points and 45 percent of return points, compared to his opponent’s showing which featured a 64 first serve percentage, three aces, two double faults and a 33 return percentage.
Next up for the Cypriot is Kevin Anderson who has also picked a two set win over Andreas Haider Maurer whom the South African defeated 6-4, 6-4. The sixth seed needed nearly one hour and a half to advance through, dominating the game at almost all facets.
Anderson only grabbed a break in the opener, which proved to be sufficient for half of victory. But things looked almost the same in the second set when the African broke his opponent once more to seal the victory after two rounds. Anderson saved at the same time five break points and missed other three, but that did not hinder him of progressing.
The world number 32 Anderson hit ten aces and won 76 percent of service points. He also converted two out of nine break points and 41 percent of return points. On the other side, Maurer came up with a 67 first serve percentage, eight aces, three double faults and a poor 24 return percentage.
