Chelsea snatch late win at Everton
snatched a late victory last night at the Goodison Park against Everton whom the Blues edged 2-1 in the fourth round of the Carling Cup.
Kalou opened the score for Andre Villas Boas side just before the break, while Saha evened the situation minutes before the final whistle. The meeting thus needed extra time to provide the winner with Chelsea progressing through thanks to Sturridge’s late break through. The Blues were left in ten men amid the second part after keeper Turnbull conceded a straight red card for a foul inside the box. Everton also finished in inferiority due to Drenthe’s red.
The first chance belonged to the visitors who troubled keeper Mucha in the third minute when Lukaku struck the ball just wide of the target following a remarkable action from Malouda. Everton broke back immediately with Turnbull making a providential save against Saha’s powerful shot. The Blues got their biggest chance of the game in the 15th minute when Boas’s side earned a penalty.
Heitinga took down McEachran inside the box with the referee showing the white spot. Anelka took the responsibility for the kick only to strike it straight into the stick. On the other end, Everton also mocked a golden chance through Bilyaletdinov whose header was denied by a vigilant Turnbull. Fellaini was the first to pick a yellow card in the 20th minute for a foul on Romeu.
Two minutes later, Alex were also shown the yellow card following a tough challenge on Drenthe. Everton missed another good opportunity in the 33rd minute following a lovely build up from Drenthe whose pass for Bilyaletdinov was hit straight at the keeper to the dismay of coach David Moyes. Kalou opened the score in the 38th minute mostly thanks to a poor keeping from Mucha who failed to hold an easy ball from the edge of the box.
Anelka got his second big chance in the 42nd minute when the French striker, who was joined by Lukaku in front, missed the target from 16 yards or so. Everton finished the first half with a big opportunity wasted by Distin whose header went just over the bar. The half time went 1-0 as Chelsea were still looking as main favorites for the win.
Moyes made the first move in the 47th minute, introducing Tony Hibbert for Phil Neville. Lukaku, who has not score a goal for Chelsea within the competition, had his effort saved in the 55th minute when he should have doubled the lead. Five minutes later, Everton won a penalty following Turnbull’s inside the box foul on Cahill.
The Chelsea keeper also received a straight red card with Boas being forced to replace Lukaku with Petr Cech. Baines arranged the ball on the white spot with Cech having his gloves clean. The Everton midfielder struck the ball in the middle, allowing Cech to make the save and keep the sheet clean for the Blues. Boas replaced McEachran with Mikel in the 65th minute to refresh the middle.
Drenthe threatened with a leveler in the 68th minute but his shot went just wide to his own dismay. The same Drenthe then conceded a yellow card for a tackle on Romeu. Mikel was also shown yellow card in the 75th minute after a tough challenge on Bilyaletdinov.
Everton made another change in the 78th minute, replacing Rodwell with Stracqualursi. Finally, Coleman was also preferred to Bilyaletdinov with eight minutes left in the game. Saha leveled the score just one minute later with a perfect header from seven yards or so to push the meeting into extra time.
Saha was the only one to create a big chance within the first extra time half as the French was denied by Bertrand at the death. Chelsea tried to break back but Sturridge’s finish was blocked by Distin. Concerning the second part, it saw Drenthe concede a red card for pushing Bertrand. Sturridge scored the winner with six minutes left in the game as the striker managed to put a rebound home from 12 yards or so.
Chelsea are through the next phase, while Everton leave the competition earlier than expected. Said Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas after the game: “To be fair we had good chances to kill off the game, couldn’t find it, got the first goal and had good chances. Then we had to fight because Everton had quality chances as well, we had 10 men and were as compact as possible but Everton had the desire and motivation and were on top, and we had to hold on until extra time arrived.”
