Murray goes third in the ATP rankings after Shanghai success

Andy Murray has won his second straight title in Shanghai when the Scott beat David Ferrer in two sets, 7-5, 6-4 to climb third in the ATP rankings, just above former world champion Roger Federer.

This was also Scott’s third title in the last four tournaments but also his fifth of the year. On the other side, David Ferrer was chasing his third one of the year after the Acapulco and Auckland successes. Murray won the first set after breaking the third seed twice in the opener. He also conceded a service amid the term but that did not hinder him of going one set atop.

As for the second set, it saw the same former fourth ranked go two games ahead of the Spaniard who conceded a couple of more services which eventually cost him the two set victory. Murray finished the game with seven aces, four double faults and four breaks, winning at the same time 69 percent of service points and 45 of return ones.

Concerning Ferrer’s performance, it featured a 44 first serve percentage, an ace, four double faults and a 55 service percentage. “I’m still going to have to win some more matches. But if you finish in front of Federer in a year, then there’s not many people the last five, six, seven years that have been able to say that. So that’s obviously a nice thing if I can do it,” said the Scott after the game.

En route to the final, Andy Murray gad crashed Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-0 in the semi finals, Matthew Ebden 6-3, 6-2 in the best eight term and edged Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the third term. Andy was favored by a BYE in the opener and made a free progress into the third term after Dmitry Tursunov’s withdrawal.

Ferrer had previously ousted conational Feliciano Lopez 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the semi finals, Andy Roddick 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 in the quarters and former world number one and veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero 1-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Spaniard made his debut in Shanghai with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Milos Raonic.

Murray is to bank $620,000 and receive 1000 points ATP, while Ferrer will pocket $304,000 and 600 points ATP.
