Phillies take 2-1 lead over St. Louis
Philadelphia Phillies left it late against St. Louis last night when the away side beat Cardinals 3-2 at the Busch stadium. Phillies scored all their points within the seventh term as Cardinals could only cut deficits to drop 1-2 in the series.
Philadelphia, who are now one win from progressing into the next term, provided a triple in the second half when Francisco hit a 405 foot homer, involving both Victorino and Ruiz in a three point trot, in what was visitors’ only momentum of the match. St. Louis broke back immediately but they were unable to recover the deficit until the end.
Freese sinlged to center and Craig cut the deficit to two points with Berkman getting to second. The eighth term went scoreless for both sides, while the ninth one saw the same hosts score another point through Pujols who made it 2-3 after Molina singled to center.
Said La Russa after the meeting: “Well, it didn’t work, so that’s bad managing. I’m watching him pitch and was really pleased. I thought he was the guy to continue pitching and I knew the matchups were in our favor. It didn’t work.”
Pujols did not panic though Cardinals are now condemned to win two games if wanted to make the progress through the second round. “Listen, we flip the page and come back ready to play with the same energy we’ve been having the last six weeks. We’ve been in this situation before,” he said.
The two sides meet again on Wednesday at the same Busch stadium where Phillies will be expected to close the series after just four games.
Philadelphia became champions thanks to a .630 regular season record which was by far the best in the National League. As for Cardinals, they finished the season second in the Central with a .556 percentage including 90 wins and 72 losses.
The same day, Texas Rangers secured the second term berth after defeating Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on the road to finish the series after just four games. Arizona Diamondbacks crashed Milwaukee Brewers 8-1 but stay 1-2 behind the Central champions. Finally, New York Yankees pushed Detroit Tigers into a fifth game after destroying them 10-1 in Detroit.
On Wednesday, St. Louis Cardinals host Phillies, while Arizona Diamondbacks visit Milwaukee.
