Rays win Game 1 against Texas
Tampa Bay Rays won the first meeting of the five game series with Texas Rangers when the East side blanked the West leaders 9-0 yesterday at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
The first inning went scoreless for both sides in what seemed to be a tight meeting, the first of the postseason. But the second term saw the visitors build a consistent lead through Damon, who hit a 359 foot homerun, and Zobrist who doubled the advantage as just. Even more than that, Shppach made it three after Joyce singled to right minutes later.
Rays dominated the entire game, leaving the hosts six points adrift after just three term. Tampa Bay came up with a triple in the third round when Shppach fired a 429 foot homer, involving both Londoria and Zborist in a 6-0 gap. The fourth term went clean for the two sides as Rays were heading towards a clear victory.
The fifth inning saw the same Tampa Bay get a double through Shoppach, who hit a 432 foot homerun, and Damon who made it 8-0 at the same time. Finally, Upton gave his side the big win in the ninth term, after Damon reached on infield single to shortstop and Longoria got to third.
Said rookie pitcher Matt Moore after the game: “I may have looked a little more calm than I was, especially early. The first inning, I had a little bit of nerves and adrenaline going. But these guys made it really easy for me, putting up those numbers. Looking up there after the fourth, I think it was 8-0, it was just a matter of throwing strikes and getting out of the innings as fast as possible.”
Rays finished the regular season second, overcoming Boston with a .562 record which would propel them straight through the playoffs. Tampa Bay have gone 91-71 this season and are now very close to reaching superior phases, though four games are left in the Texas series.
On the other side, Rangers, finished the West Conference with a .593 record which includes 96 wins and 66 defeats. The former champions will meet Rays on Saturday in Game 2 on the same Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
The second playoff game between Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees has been suspended due to heavy rain and is likely to resume on Saturday at the Yankee stadium. The game stopped after the first two innings, at 1-1. Young had opened the game for Detroit with a 342 foot homer, while Jeter brought hosts’ the leveler right afterwards.
On Saturday, Arizona Diamondbacks will meet Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies welcome St. Louis Cardinals the same day.
