Ronaldo scores three as Real move top
Cristiano Ronaldo’s 15 minute hat trick and Higuain’s early opener gave Real Madrid a comprehensive 4-0 win against Malaga last night at the La Rosaleda stadium.
Real Madrid, who have now gone top of the La Liga table, scored all their goals within the first half. The game started with a controversial action which saw Khedira trip Joaquin inside the box, with the referee letting the game go on. Malaga’s first chance came in the fifth minute when right defender Gamez was denied by a vigilant Marcelo who cleared the air in what could have been an early shock for the visitors.
Gonzalo Higuain opened the score in the 11th minute following a lovely combinative play the finish of which showed the Argentine beat the keeper before delivering home. Real Madrid edged their second one just two minutes later but the Malaga defence cleared Alonso’s dangerous free kick away.
The hosts edged their leveler in the 20th minute when Manuel Pellegrini’s side mocked a good opportunity following a set piece taken by Apono. Three minutes later, Ronaldo started to build his hat trick, making it 2-0 with a lovely finish from inside the box. Di Maria was picked on the right to deliver the cross for Portuguese’s easy strike.
Eliseu was shown a yellow card in the 26th minute for barks towards the referee. Ronaldo completed his double two minutes later after another great build up from Jose Mourinho’s side. The star was picked on the edge of the box, slalomed between to marks and beat the keeper with a low shot into the right hand bottom corner.
With seven minutes left in the first half, Ronaldo made it 4-0 following a corner from the right which Ramos headed across the face of the goal for Ronaldo’s heel finish. Malaga broke back immediately through Cazorla who hit it into the side netting to his own dismay.
Ronaldo neared his fourth goal just before the half time, but his finish went just wide. One minute later, the home side failed to cut the deficit when Toulalan was denied by Casillas. The break went 4-0 as things looked clear as possible for both sides.
Concerning the second half, it started with Malaga’s big miss. Demichelis’s had his head effort blocked as far as Apono who hit the rebound straight at the keeper. Real’s reply came just one minute later when Higuain wanted to complete a double following a lovely action built by Kaka and Ronaldo the finish of which saw the Argentine miss it.
Cazorla wasted another good chance for Malaga in the 55th minute when his effort went just wide of the target. Casillas also had a big contribution in keeping the sheet clean for his side. He made a providential save just one minute later when Eliseu was dismissed by the Real captain. Rondon also had a big chance to score in the 57th minute but it was the same Casillas to hold the ball.
Cazorla’s cross was then finished wide by Demichelis as Real were slowing it down. Mourinho made the firt change in the 60th minute, replacing Kaka with Mesut Ozil. Eliseu tried his luck with a superb shot from outside the box which reached the stands. Arbeola picked his first yellow in the 69th minute for a foul on Cazorla.
Madrid then introduced Karim Benzema for Higuain, while Malaga replaced Cazorla with Fernandez. Mourinho made even a third move in the 75th minute when the Special One introduced Callejon for Di Maria. Malaga made the second change right afterwards as Pellegrini called Joaquin on the bench and sent Buonanotte in.
Fernandez hit the bar in the 80th minute as the hosts were still chasing their consolation. Eliseu made way for Monreal with five minutes before the final whistle. The last word belonged to Ronaldo whose finish was tipped away by the keeper.
Said a delighted Jose Mourinho at the end of the meeting: “I liked everything. We played well at one-touch and two-touch football, our movements without the ball were good, and our right backs and cetre midfielders pressurised further up the pitch. I liked my team in every aspect of the game and we scored all sorts of goals: from set pieces, following steals in attack…”
Real Madrid have now climbed top of the table with 19 points, having FC Barcelona just one point behind them. On the other side, Malaga are sixth with 13 points. Mourinho’s side will next meet Villarreal amid the next week, while Pellegrini’s side faces newly promoted Rayo Vallecano next Wednesday.
