Wozniacki flies through the quarters in Beijing
Main favorite Caroline Wozniacki has eased through the Beijing quarter finals when the Dane upset rested Kaia Kanepi inn two sets, 6-3, 7-6. Next up for the world champion is Flavia Pennetta whom she will meet for the sixth time.
Kanepi, who had a day off thanks to Sabine Lisicki’s abandon, was unable to trouble the top seed who closed the game after one hour and 45 minutes. Wozniacki controlled the game though she faced some difficulty in the second set when she was forced to tie break. The Dane converted a break point out of two tries in the opener and saved other three coming from the opposite side.
As for the second set, it saw the two exchange four breaks, two apiece, with Wozniacki surviving a late scare against the stubborn Kanepi who convert her both break points. But against the midway form, Kanepi lost all her pace, allowing the favorite to go four mini breaks atop of her and clinch the victory with some ease in the end.
The Danish player finished the match with a 75 first serve percentage, an ace, a 64 service percentage and a 43 return one, converting at the same time three out of four break points. On the other side, Kanepi came up with a 57 service percentage, six aces and five double faults. The Estonian also won 36 percent of return points and managed two out of five break points.
The head to head series between the two has now gone 3-1 to the 21 year old Caroline who conceded the only defeat last month at the Japanese event in Tokyo. She will next meet Flavia Pennetta who follows a three set victory over Dominika Cibulkova.
Pennetta needed nearly two hours to oust the Slovak, upsetting her 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to set her second meeting of the year with Wozniacki. The Italian won the first set with ease, breaking her opponent three times to suggest an easy victory. But the second set showed a new look Cibulkova who fought back to even the score thanks to a couple of breaks.
The Slovak also conceded a service but that did not hinder her of pushing the clash into a third set decider and even threaten with a late comeback. Finally, the last term was dominated by the same Italian who managed to convert two out of four break points before sealing the victory.
Overall, Pennetta won 56 percent of first serve points and 59 of service ones. She also fired six aces and committed four double faults but only conceded 77 points out of 165 played. World number 26 has improved her record against the 22 year old to 4-1. Unfortunately, she is led 0-5 by Caroline Wozniacki whom she will be trying to beat of the first time tomorrow.
One of the biggest surprises of the tournament came from former world number one Ana Ivanovic who crashed third seed Vera Zvonareva in two sets, 6-2, 6-1. It took the Serb just one hour and eight minutes to oust the Russian whom she broke four times in the opener. Ana also conceded a couple of services but an impressive 68 return percentage helped her to clinch the first lead in nearly half an hour.
As for the second set, it was controlled by the same Serb who rallied past her opponent to set a five game lead. Ivanovic picked a couple of more breaks and kept her service sheet clean throughout the entire term as Vera packed earlier than expected.
Ivanovic came up with a 50 first serve percentage, a 61 return one and six breaks, compared to the Russian whose showing included a 52 first serve percentage, a poor 38 return one and six double faults. The 23 year old Serb has evened the direct confrontations with the world number three 5-5, her last defeat to Vera dating from this year’s Carlsbad event.
Ivanovic will next meet 11th seed Agnieszka Radwanska who has also made an easy progress into the best eight term. The Polish, winner of the 2011 San Diego event and last month’s Tokyo one, beat host Jie Zheng 6-1, 6-4, needing one hour and 17 minutes to secure the next round berth.
Radwanska broke the Chinese twice in the first set when she also saved a break point amid the round, but had a harder life in the second one. Zheng finally broke her opponent early in the set only to be left two games adrift by a lively Polish who replied with a couple of more breaks which helped her to pick the win after two sets.
Agnieszka won 62 percent of first serve points, hit two aces and converted 66 percent of service points. She also impressed with a 51 return percentage and four break point conversions in six tries. On the other side, Zheng’s performance featured a 79 first serve percentage, two double faults, a 34 return percentage and a 49 service one.
World number 12 Radwanska has doubled the lead in the head to head series with the 72nd ranked Zheng whom she has defeated three times in four meetings. Zheng’s only win comes from the same Beijing event in 2008. The 22 year old will meet Ivanovic for the seventh time, the head to head series between the two having gone 3-3.
Concerning the second half of the draw, Maria Kirilenko crashed out Tamira Paszek in two sets, 6-1, 6-2 in one hour and 23 minutes. The Russian broke her opponent twice in the opener to go five games atop and take an easy first lead. Kirilenko also saved a couple of points and developed a 59 return percentage.
The second set looked almost the same as the first one. Kirilenko managed to pick up a couple of more breaks before sealing through a clear win. Paszek finished the game with poor 29 return percentage, leaving the tournament earlier than expected. Kirilenko came up with a 58 first serve percentage, an ace, a 71 service percentage and a 58 receiving one.
On contrast, the Austrian won just 42 percent of service points and committed four double faults. She also grabbed 34 points out of 97 played. The world number 54 Paszek has improved her lead against the 24 year old at 3-0. Her previous win came from this year’s Carlsbad tournament. Kirilenko will next meet Romania’s Monica Niculescu who edged Virginie Razzano after losing the opener, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
A late consistent comeback saw the Romanian six breaks in the last two sets. The French took the first lead after exchanging five breaks with Niculescu who conceded three services in the first term to allow the lower ranked grab half a victory.
But the second set brought Monica three break point conversions, managing at the same time to keep the sheet clean on her services. She thus evened the situation with some ease and started the decider as favorite.
Niculescu did continue to set the pace in the last round, as well, breaking Razzano three more times for a two hour and a half win. She finished the meeting with an impressive 80 first serve percentage, a 54 return one, a double fault and a 55 service percentage, compared to French’s 67 first serve percentage, six double faults and four breaks.
The head to head series between the two has been evened at one as Razzano’s only win comes from the 2010 Auckland event. Niculescu will meet Kirilenko for the third time on Friday when both of them will chase the second win over the other.
Finally, Andrea Petkovic is to meet Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final eight. The German edged seed Marion Bartoli after surviving an early scare, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, while the Russian has made a free progress after Victoria Azarenka, who had been seeded second in Beijing, withdrew due to injury.
“It’s disappointing. I’m sorry to the fans. I was hoping my foot would be okay, but it has been bothering me since Tokyo. I’m not sure about recovery time but I will consult my doctor. I hope to be back for Luxembourg,” said the Belarusian.
Ninth seed Andrea Petkovic needed two hours and 46 minutes to secure the quarter final berth, breaking her opponent seven times in 12 tries. The German lost the opener after conceding a couple of services as Bartoli was looking pretty confident.
Concerning the second set, it was controlled by Petkovic who managed to grab a late break which propelled her two games atop after a tight rally which saw the two exchange five breaks. Finally, the last term was the tightest one as the two exchanged five more breaks. Fortunately for the German, Bartoli’s lack of concentration allowed her to steal a late service which would have pushed her into the tie break.
She thus won the set at five to make the progress through the final eight round. Petkovic came up with a 69 first serve percentage, three aces, four double faults and a 48 return percentage. On the other side, Bartoli’s performance featured a 55 first serve percentage, six breaks, eight double faults and a 46 return percentage.
